I got a "beginning PHP4" book for christmas and today, I set about installing PHP4. So, I downloaded the appropriate software and it was all going fine. I installed PHP4 and PWS. It told me what to change in the php.ini file and where to add all the .dll files to, all of which I had done.

Next, I installed PWS and did exactly what my book said to do. It then said it was all fine and it should all be installed. So it then told me how to test if the installation had worked, by making a "phptest.php" file. I copied what it told me to do exactly and saved it in the appropriate place (C:/Inetpub/wwwroot).

It then said to open the web browser and see what happens if I type "http://localhost/" which I did and I got the screen that the book said I should get. I then tried "http://localhost/phpinfo.php" and it asked me if I wanted to download the php file. This is not right because it had a picture in the book of what I should of got.

I just don't know what is wrong so any suggestions would be more than welcome.

Thanks is advance.

Well, it's the fastet according to statistics and surveys. I'm sure it wouldn't be hard to find an independant analysis.

Sure, software has forks, but Apache is written by the Apache Software Foundation, and there are NOT different versions of Apache :)

Open source is much better than closed source, BECAUSE hackers can read it. Most hackers only hack because it's an achievement. They only do it so they can tell the makers and write a patch.

Lastly, Linux Mandrake 8.1 is officially easier to install than WinXP. There's a link hanging around these forums somewhere.

According to who? The people who built it?

OK... I agree with you on that.

A multi-headed beast this one. Firstly. MS is a large company, and as such has the focus of the media. If a bug appears in an MS product, the world knows about it. Conversely, if a bug appears in any *nix product, you don't get it splashed over the morning news, you just download a quiet patch... Also, if a MS discovers a bug, they have teams of people working on a fix, with open-source, people get around to it, when they have the time.

Another plus point... I agree. But then, so is PWS.

> It's open-source

Another double-edged sword, it can never be truely secure because people can read the source code, and either discover bugs, or code hacks that exploit system weakness, ever heard of William Morris?

Also, open-source is all well and good, until people disagree on what direction to take, then you get software forks and stuff like that. How many versions of Unix are there now?

> It runs on *nix

OK. Now try to get somebody off the street to install *nix.. In fact, ask them if they have heard of Unix. Not much chance of that, but give 'em a copy of Windows and they will pretty much get through it.

No, I think we have enough to discuss for now ;)

I uninstalled it by putting the windows disk in and adding/removing different sections. It might be the way you uninstalled it, just a thought...

Try killing it using ctrl+alt+delete

Also, run "msconfig" and get rid of all references to it.

Also... If I remember correctly it's part of "Windows Setup" or something. It's the tab next to the main on in Add/Remove Programs. Uncheck that one as well.

Define "best"? Well:

It's the fastest
It's the most stable
It's the most secure
It's free
It's open-source
It runs on *nix

Need more?

I can't believe it worked first time ... that never happen last time, which is why I tried the PWS, which also was a pain in the ass. Tried this again though, and it worked :o)
