Now, i know that the playstation had a few good games like metal gear and the on-going final fantasy series yet there was very little more than that---and the system had 1000+ games to its name!
Behind Nintendo's handheld systems the playstation is the most succesfull console of all time and approximately only 4-5% of it's games are above average!
As i have stated above the four letters that have led to the success of the Playstation are indeed S-O-N-Y of course.
Think about it, would any of you bought the 'Hitatchi Playstation' with 4%-5% decent games and a CD player.
-> You can draw your own conclusions.
Then again, the PS2's prospects are looking rosier by the day-(Jak and Dakster, GTA3, Burnout,Devil May Cry)but how long will this last for? A few months? Until the festive Xmas Shopping season is over?
And indeed a Games Cosole is used for playing video games and not to play DVDs nor to play CDs and it seems Nintendo are the only participents in the next-gen console war to be emphasizing this.
Well, here's this member reminiscing of the glorious times of when Sega and Nintendo ruled supreme releasing game-upon-game of jam packed gameplay where graphics were not of the matter.
MGS, FF7,FF8, Medal of Honour 1&2, TOCA 1&2, CrashBandicoot, BishiBashi Special, Vib Ribbon, Saltwater fishing, BomberMan, Colin McRae Rally 1&2, Destruction Derby, Fifa 2000, LMA Manager 1&2, CM Quiz, Spyro, Res Evil 1&2, ISS, WipeOut 1&2, GT1&2.
Yes.. I love my franchises. But it just goes to show how much of a money making machine the Sony Playstation is... and how much tripe the other games truly are.
The word SONY appealed to more young adults (i.e 20 to 30yr olds) then any other console had done previously.
Just look at the old Nintendo and Sega adverts - Cyber Razor Cut and Pirate TV... it was aimed at kids.
SONY just made the whole console scene seem more grown up.
I would like to have seen how diffenent the world would have been if it was the SEGA Playstation or MB Games Playstation...... its a different kettle of fish then aint it. You just wouldnt have got young adults buying the thing and making the words 'Sony Playstation' as cool as they are today.
It mostly boiled down to an image / advertising thing that made the Playstation such a success.
We're all just lucky that some developers actually made good games for the system - and weren't just out to make money like the rest of the cr@ppy publishers out there *coughs* 3DO.
I only pray that SONY & Microsoft both actually try a damn sight harder to get a better %'s of high standard games on their systems for this coming 'war'.
(I ignored Nintendo... cus their bound to have a good %'s)
;)
I agree, back in the days of the SNES yo got quality releases all year round, recently I finished Burnout in a weekend, Jak & Daxter is nearly finished after about ten hours of play.
But £40 for a game is cheap when you compare it to going to see a football match or concert etc, you get more hours for your pound if you see what I mean.
back to the quality issue, I bought my PS2 when GT3 came out in July, I saw no reason to buy one before, I've bought half a dozen games since and the quality releases have mostly arrived in Nov/Dec, apart from MGS2 and FF10, I can't see many great releases the first few months of 2002.
Wipeout is a borderline case, an updated version of an already tired game.
Thank god for part exchange or we would all be put off dipping our hands in our pockets ever again for fear of being short changed.
