Yucky yucky yucky yucky.
I hate it.
I hate it.
I hate it.

English - 'Speaking and Listening'.

TOMORROW

What a load of crap. I hate it.
All nervous and horrible.

"Talk for 2 minutes on something you feel strongly about"
Crap.
I couldn't care less about pretty much everything.

So I did this:

**

The most common fear among people is not one of spiders or heights but of speaking in public.

Surely people should not be forced into doing something they don’t want to; you wouldn’t allow a spider to crawl across your face or to be dangled off the top of a skyscraper.
It goes against all our rights as people - we should not be told to do something we feel uncomfortable or even scared to do. So why then are we required to do a presentation, speech or role-play in front of the whole class if this very thing is the source of many people’s fears?

They may say that public speaking is a skill that needs to be tested and improved. True or not I have no desire to speak in front of any group of people on any subject for any length of time because it makes me nervous and uncomfortable.

If anyone actually wanted to speak or act in front of anyone then they should have chosen Drama as one of their options. Why, if this is an option in one part of the school so that people can choose not to if they don’t want to, is it a compulsory part in another area? Why is the same thing covered in two different subjects?
The speaking and listening part of the English course doesn’t really seem to serve any purpose at all.

In my experience no-one really enjoys doing presentations in English lessons. Nor are these tasks treated seriously. Instead, the lessons provided for working our what to do and practising are more frequently used for chatting and mucking about. The general opinion seems to be that speaking and listening task are not important.
The time wasted could be used more constructively for improving coursework or revising for the final, crucial exam.

Speaking and listening is just something that is put in the course to try and make English seem more interesting. All it does is waste time, effort and puts us under large amounts of stress for an unimportant piece of work making up a negligible percentage of the final mark.

In conclusion - I have just wasted 2 minutes of my life.

It seems that more people are scared of public speaking than they are at death, so, when they're sitting at a funeral, they'd rather be in the coffin than be the person giving the ulogy (THe speaking thing which I don't know how to spell)...

Hey, you speak English right ? You've got ears :) Hence, English speaking and listening will be no problem.

I completely screwed mine up, basically said my thing really fast and with about as much effort that I need to type this now, and I still got A*.

Same with French speaking, I can't tell you hardly any French now, but I still got A.

Reckon the school fiddled grades :D

I am exactly the same as you FFF, I can do everything great in English, writing, or reading into myself, but as soon as I open my mouth in class my speech descends into a load of random mumblings and gibberish.

I find the French ones easier because you don't really know what you're on about, so it's different.
Sort of.
Whatever.

This really annoys me becuase I just cannot speak in public. I love to read, get through loads of books - but as soon as I try to read out loud I sound like a blind 2-year-old.
And all my other coursework is As or A*s, so this'll being me down.

But I'll get 'em.

I'll show em in a very nervous, self-conscious, mumbling, quiet, stumbling kind of way.
I'll show em.

Not exactly that hard to speak in your own tongue. French. Now that was tricky......

Although I never did an English one, it must be easier than speaking French.

Nice. I don't even know when I have to do it......Is it only certain chosen people have to do it for a moderator?

Don't say "um" or "er" ever and you'll do fine.
