Sony releases more PlayStation 2 sales figures
Posted on Dec. 20, 2001 - 4:31 pm [GMT] by Solid Snake
---------------------------------------------
The PlayStation 2 is doing quite well despite two new competitors on the market.

Sony Computer Entertainment America has announced that it has sold 1.5 million units of the PlayStation 2 since the week of Thanksgiving helping to establish an installed user base of 6.5 million units in the US. Sony also claims that according to TRSTS reports from the NPD Group, PlayStation and PlayStation 2 software sales have accounted for more than two-thirds of the video game software market during the month of November. Sales from the PlayStation family of products, including hardware, software, and peripherals, have generated more than $700 million in revenue during the same time period.

Konami's Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty was the best-selling console game in November, followed by Grand Theft Auto III, Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 3, Harry Potter: The Sorcerer's Stone, Madden NFL 2002, and WWF Smackdown! Just Bring It. In all, the PlayStation family of products accounted for five of the top 10 best-selling console games in November and more than 60 percent of that total revenue.

Clearly, data for the first month of the holiday sales season indicates that the entire PlayStation family of products will soundly outsell all competitors combined, despite the heralded introduction of new game consoles during this important month, said Jack Tretton, senior vice president of Sony Computer Entertainment America. We recognize the importance of delivering products that provide the greatest overall value for the consumer and are happy to see that consumers are placing their support behind the PlayStation brand once again this holiday season.

PlayStations sales exceed expectation
Posted on Dec. 07, 2001 - 4:30 pm [GMT] by Solid Snake

-----------------------------------
Despite Xbox and GameCube's brisk launch sales, Sony is having no problem holding their own. The PlayStation 2 sold over 317,000 units during the week of November 17th, and now has an installed base in North America of more than 6 million units.

Press release:

FOSTER CITY, Calif., Dec. 7 /PRNewswire/ -- Sony Computer Entertainment America Inc. today announced stronger than expected sales during Thanksgiving week, exceeding its original product forecasts despite the current economic conditions. Based on sales reports covering the first holiday sales weekend, the company projects that total PlayStation category sales will bring in more than $1 billion in retail revenue during December 2001. Sony Computer Entertainment America Inc. executives stated the introduction of two new competitive consoles had no impact on sales of its coveted PlayStation 2 computer entertainment system or PS one console.

Consumers visiting retail outlets interested in new products chose the industry leading, trusted PlayStation brand, purchasing more than 317,000 PlayStation 2 units and 100,000 PS one consoles during the week of November 19. PlayStation 2 sales rose more than 62 percent from the week prior, demonstrating an increased consumer interest around the platform. This sales volume remained consistent for the week of November 26 as the company sold more than 321,000 PlayStation units, with PS one experiencing another 100,000-unit week during this period.

These latest sales findings bring the life-to-date installed base of PlayStation 2 in North America to more than 6 million units since its debut 13 months ago. PS one/PlayStation consoles can be found in more than one out of every three U.S. households as the company now has sold 31 million units to consumers.

"We experienced record-breaking sales for the PlayStation family of products during the Thanksgiving time period and expect this trend to continue throughout the holidays,'' said Jack Tretton, senior vice president, Sony Computer Entertainment America Inc. "For the first time since the introduction of PlayStation 2 in 2000, consumers have the opportunity to choose from multiple new console offerings. Competitive marketing efforts drove consumers to retail and many chose to purchase our products once they compared the benefits of each system. Overall in 2001 we forecast that 66 percent or $2 out of every $3 retail console dollars will result from sales of PlayStation products.

"Our retail partners are reporting to us that 2001 will be the best year yet for videogame sales,'' added Tretton. "For 54 months straight, the PlayStation business has been the sales leader in every category in which it competes. We have maintained that success by providing both the PlayStation enthusiast and new consumers with a wealth of entertainment at affordable prices.''

Sony Computer Entertainment America executives also said the surge in holiday sales may be correlated to the fact that in-home entertainment purchases are on the rise. In a survey commissioned by the company, one in three consumers indicated they would seek entertainment choices that offer a break from real world events this holiday season. Leading retailers like Wal-Mart and Sears have also stated that home electronics are the hottest selling entertainment products this season, with DVD and videogame sales leading the pack.

In addition, growing software sales will contribute heavily to the overall performance of the gaming business during the holidays. Major hits topping the charts for PlayStation 2 computer entertainment system include: Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty from Konami of America, SSX Tricky from Electronic Arts, Devil May Cry from Capcom, Grand Theft Auto 3 from Rockstar Games, Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 3 from Activision, and Gran Turismo 3 A-Spec from Sony Computer Entertainment America Inc.

Hmmmm I am pretty sure that they also got the price cut. Because I read on PSX Extreme (which is an american site) about the sales of the gamecube and the x-box and they clearly said something about the PS2 sales improving during the first week of the price cut......

Ill try and give you a link if i can

I think Ortega's right - PS2 is still $299 in the US.

For once, rip-off Britain gets the best deal!

The PS2 has been cut in price in the US? I was under the impression that it was still $299.

Yes that is true, but bare in mind that there is a different market here in the UK. People may want different products and whereas the X-Box may sell well in the US, the UK customers might oversee it. Ok maybe people get a similar amount of information about the products that are put on the market, so they can decide what is best for them but in my opinion there is a difference between the demand in the US and the UK. I mean look at Japanese gamers. They prefer all that mech type games while us in the UK do not seem to be into that kind of stuff which is basically why those games are not released over here.

2. Launch time is usually a

Indeed that is true. Sont have managed to obtain a huge number of followers after the success of the PSone and naturally most of them (like me) decided to buy Sony's latest offering. The PS2 offers an excellent range of titles for all ages even though most of us know that the best is still to come.

Exactly how I see it. Every console is going to have its audience that will prefer the games that are released by the corresponding company. For example younger audience will like the Gamecube because of the amount of games with "cute" characters and the older audience could buy it because they loved Mario games when they were younger (dont know if thats the case with you :) ). Every console will find a place on the market and hopefully will establish itself there. The PS2 is already very well established and just like the sales suggest will stay there for a long time.

Very true, but also remember that PS2 would have sold many, many more units had Sony been able to produce machines quickly enough to meet the demand.

And while PS2 did initially only have Dreamcast to compete with, it now has Gamecube and Xbox in the US and is still exceeding expectations.

Whichever slant you put on it, the PS2 remains the dominant force.

That's true, but bear these points in mind also...

1. These sales figures are a valid and fair comparison, as they only account for US sales; i.e. they don't compare global PS2 sales with only US sales of the machines.

2. Launch time is usually a 'peak' in the sales of a console... yet Sony are outselling the opposition with 18-month and 6-year-old products.

But these figures show that, despite some people's claims, the PS2 is not going to be annihilated or over-run. The market should balance out fairly evenly, with each machine being sustained by ots own substantial market share.

Having said that, the Xbox and Gamecube sold out pretty quickly in most places.
And the Gamecube did out-do the PS2's launch figures (and all the PS2 had to compete with was the Dreamcast, which everyone was ignoring anyway!!!).

Just telling you the statistics through a Ninty's eyes...

I am 16 and believe me I dont habe any money :) I can easily save up some cash because I dont really spend a lot of cash on anything but you are right, itll be hard to buy games for both consoles. But I didnt say I AM buying one of them. I said I am considering it. I mean I could always get one for my birthday or something.....
