Has it all been done? Have we used up all of the available permutations?

Noticed how games nowadays just seem to be more of the same but with better graphics and sound? The latest new genre arguably could be the "stealth" element injected notably by Metal Gear Solid on the PSX platform, but this strategy appears in many other games today, the latest being, to some degree, Deus Ex.

What will be the next genre....

If you can think of an idea for a genre that has not already been rehashed into many other games, then you have found a niche, and having the proper backing means you can exploit this niche to the full. What price the copyright on a good genre?

Any other bright ideas? Because I dried up after this one, and anyway, it was attempted back in the 80s on the Spectrum platform, but the name of the game eludes me. You had to use a "modem" to crack a conspiracy that was brewing. Never did get to the end of it, but the genre was novel and perhaps underdeveloped on later platforms.

How about Celebrity Shoot em ups, picture this you walk into a crowded room "Westlife" are playing, you dont like the fact theyre hailed as a good band because theyve equalled the number of consecutive number one hits that the Beatles had! So you shoot them all, and anyone who tries to stop you.
That would work, also a Football hooligan em up would be nice choose your club, choose your mascot and your in for some fighting fun.

How about Sim Celebrity? It would be great. Imagine BEING Posh & Becks and having to endure people taking your photographs while living in a huge mansion, earning millions of pounds a year and generally being lucker fu...

Sorry. Maybe it wouldn't make such a good game after all.

What we need is new peripherals, new ways of veiwing and interacting with our consoles...Then well get new Genres. At the moment were limited with our joypads and flat Visual Display Units, hopefully with new peripherals new genres will appear. Look at Sega Bass Fishing, OK you could argue its a sports sim but the fishing peripheral makes this a truely new and original gameing experience.

You don't have to create new genres to be original.

Adding new idea's to old ones is normally suficient.

How about a first person bemani game? Kind of Quake III with funky a*s moves.

Can I have an award for the worst idea ever? :-)

I will tell you the next gaming genre...someday when I think of one. But for now I would put my money on more of the same, I mean Natsume, the kings of originality, and the producers of the funkiest farm frolics around HM64, Managed to do it with River king and Harvest Moon.

I think it is only a matter of time and careful planning to hit the gaming world with a new genre. I mean the could be anysort of genre possible, for instance, fishing, farming, life, building houses.

Maybe a building game is next, Forget Bob, )insert your own name here) will be the new builder on he block! I think that would be good, Or maybe a RPG racing game like a game based on the Canonball Run series! They were ace and I would love to do that......noy a bad Idead actually.

Come to think of it, Mixing the genres might be the key to defining new ones. I mean you could have and RPG where you were a little Man and he fought throughbattles to find a steering wheel and then he had to win a rece to save the girl. That is a bit OTT but you get the picture and you know what I don't think it will be to long before we see this mixing genres thing happen!
