Owning an N64 at school was the hardest thing to do... in my heart, I knew the games were top, and I loved them, and played them to death... but after years of 'PSX is better because it just is' even I because curious of what SONY were doing...

After being able to avoid the PSX as best I could, I decided to go with Sony temporarily in round 2 with a PS2, and although my library of games is great and includes games of all of which own a 90%+ rating, the PS2 library in general, has quite a low standard.

And don't scream "GT3" at me, i've played the game, and as far as racing games go, it rules... at least it will until WipeOut Fusion comes(, which is without a doubt, better and more fun to play)! But for every GT3 and every Pro Evolution Soccer, there's a Simpson's Road rage and a TIF 2002, a Wild Wild Racing and a Fifa 2002...

Fate is seems, is too lazy to change, and the crowded library that drew so many hardcore gamers away from the PSX, seems to be coming back to haunt the PS2 again... Now, I know the N64 wasn't without a few bad games, I mean.... Superman 64, anyone? But still, in comparison the standard on the N64 was much higher...

Think of it as a battery farm thingy... not, RBS, not Duracell, but with Turkeys... If you crowd the turkeys, they don't get enough food water or air... and they're killing each other... So.. the PS2 games are the turkeys... and certain games within the pen have dominance, like GT3 which gets to eat food... but then there's wild wild racing which is the Sniper of the pen... it gets nothing... and games like wild wild racing and Wacky Racers are killing each other because both are crap... and if one were to be released it might see success, where as it's like having one in a desert with no water and another in space with no food..... kinda...!

Side note: ( think i need to see a doctor...)

The Gamecube, it seems, has quite a high standard for it's games...with Luigi's Mansion, PIKMIN, Smash Brothers, SFA, Sonic Adv. 2, PSO V2, ED, Resident Evil and Metroid all topping my list...

And you can moan about how most of those are first and second-party games, but the fact that they're coming along much sooner and in my opinion of better quality is quite enough to cancel that remark out... I'd go as far as to say that the Gamecube in 2 months will have a library just as competant as the PS2's, and that Nintendo catching Sony up this time around isn't such a long shot...

I suppose I could go on all day about how X beats Y and how 'A' takes longer to type than 'a', but just look at the PS2 games in a game shop... it really is a case of a few roses amongst the thorns... I'm not saying there are no decent games, but out of the 300 (Approx.) games on the shelf, there are but 20 worth having... and after that, only a percentage will appeal to each person...

The Gamecube or X-Box might not have so many games just yet, but already titles like PIKMIN and Halo are leaving PS2 titles of the same genre standing... The PS2 seems like a £200 lottery ticket... the chances of finding a 90% game in the 300+ library are low, and even then you have to find one you like...

It's all Sports and Racing, and soon enough gamers will get tired of it... if you ask me, Sony should definitely chase up franchise sequels for Jak and Daxter and Baldur's Gate: DA... because, like I said... people will only take so many sports and racing games... and in a library with such a low standard, that's quite a risk to take as it is!

Still, I suppose PS2 owners can laugh at the Cube-less Ninties and throw MGS2 and SOE boxes at them...

Well, it would actually be Metal Gear 5, given that Metal Gear Solid is Metal Gear 3, and Meal Gear Solid 2 is Metal Gear 4....

The thing is even if there are crap titles, we the purple are able to pick the good from the bad, because we are, on the whole, pretty well informed.

I don't much care if a 'casual gamer' picks up a game because the box looks nice then gets disappointed because the game is rubbish. He should have read a review, and saved the trouble.

If we all read reviews, would there be no bad games?

Do you realise what you just wrote here? Innovative titles?
Tekken 4. Four. Yes, four. THPS 4. Oh, there's that 4 again.
GTN, well, that's technically 4. Poplular number, eh.
And who could forget MGS3. Not quite 4 , but nearly.

Innovation? Oh, please....

There are by far too many racing games on PS2... developers are only just starting to use new ideas... about time to... but then again, with Tekken 4 and THPS4, and GTN and MGS3 on the way or announced, the innovative titles are bound to be swapmed down by the endless racing and sports titles...

Where's the love? Huh?

I feel your missing the point somewhat. So what if there's a plethora of crap games on system X. Quite simply, don't buy them. I've got consoles coming out of my ears, from various stages in history, and do you know what? I don't own a single game that I consider not to be excellant. 'Cos I only buy the good ones.

IMO, most of the consoles from the previous generation had a similar number of superlative titles available by the end of their shelf life. It was just the quanitity and quality of the awful titles that distinguished them.

And as for sports and racing games, they are what sell at the moment. I work with a guy who bought a PS2 to play sports sims on. He won't even consider buying any other game, no matter how much I tell him about how good they are.

Gamecube Launch aint all that special.

Depending upon where you read your reviews, you will be hard pushed to see anything pushing above 90%.

Yeah, I understand Gamecube will be getting the likes of Zelda, Perfect Dark and Mario within the next year but...why bother waiting for that? The PS2 has the 90%+ games already.

PS2 has loads of 90%+ titles.

Off the top of my head....

GTA3
GT3
NBA Street
Twisted Metal Black
SSX:tricky
Tony Hawks 3
ICO
Devil May Cry
Jak & Daxter
Pro Evolution Soccer
Final Fantasy X

*Ortega runs out of ideas...ortega...ortega checks out website...ortega carries on*

Metal Gear solid 2
Half-life
Soul Reaver 2

ahhh, that will do.

Anyway, I'm sure all these games cleary show that the PS2 is a worthwhile console to own, becasue it has a whole range of superb games.

On a lighter note... "If you want to get funky, like a bow legged monkey, you got to Funkifize"

Those are actual lyrics from a song called "Funkifize" by a band called Tower of Power.

This was my favourite bit... :-)

List those games as though the unreleased titles mean anything to us! Yay! High standard you say? Well read those titles and be convinced!

Hang on, I know very little of these games as they're not on general release and I haven't played any of them, how am I to know what the standard is? Rely on hype you say?

Ok, but I tried that with the N64, look were that got me!

lol... very true though...

I mean look at silent hill 2...

X-Box is twice as good as PS2, of course... gamecube is in a league of its own up on the console throne (because i say so), but well...

lol again...

I know the feeling...

DC had the wacky original arcade games
GC has the pure hardcore must play games
Xbox has the better version of PS2 games.

OK! So it's a simplified view, but it's past midnight!
