I thought I would start a topic so that everyone could talk about who they felt was the footballer of the year, using only premiership players!

In my personal opinion, Michael Owen has shown this year what he is capable of and the fact that he could rule the world. There are a few other players who I was thinking of writing about in this section such as David Beckham, Ryan Giggs, Teddy Sheringham, Steven Gerrard and of course Fabien Barthez, but I decided that Owen has impressed me the most.

Michael Owen is one of the best strikers in the world. If you wanted to watch a player in form, then Michael Owen would be that person. He just can’t seem to stop scoring at the moment, whether he is playing for Liverpool or England. He has scored about 12 goals already this season for Liverpool, and he scored that marvellous hat trick against Germany on Saturday.

As a Liverpool player, Owen has played about 180 times, scoring roughly 99 goals in the process. This is an amazing number of goals to score in that many games and I am 100% that he will score a lot more in the future. In his first season, in the premiership, for Liverpool, he scored 21 goals. The following season saw him score 23, 2 better than the previous season. Like I have said, he has already scored 7 goals this season and we are only 3 premiership games into the new season. I think Owen could break the 30-goal barrier this season quite easily.

Quite frankly, I'm still in shock that he scored that incredible goal against Argentina back in 1998, and to think - 99 goals for Liverpool already says so much about him!

As an England player, Michael Owen has made 32 caps and scored 14 goals. 3 of these goals came against Germany a few moths ago when England stuffed their opposition 5-1. This was a game that England needed to win to make them have a better chance of winning their group and qualifying automatically for the World Cup 2002 Finals, at the time. Owen scored his first hat trick of England and it could not have come against a better team. England had never beaten Germany, in Germany, until Saturday and England proved that they are capable of winning the World Cup. I feel that if Owen keeps playing like he is at the moment, he will keep scoring for his country and could end up easily as England’s best ever goal scorer. Since then, England have qualified for the World Cup Finals as they drew against Greece and Germany could only draw against Finland, although Germany are also through having beaten Ukraine in the Play-Offs.

Michael Owen is still a young player, but he is a player that every team would want in their side, especially now seeing as he can’t stop scoring.

Owen was recently voted European footballer of the year, which is a great achievement for him and it shows that he is capable of becoming the best footballer in the world.

Overall, Owen is simply a fantastic player and a joy to watch.

I was lucky enough to be at the FA cup to see his double
against the Gunners, whereas Henry in that game missed a hatful of chances.(Even if one or two hit Henchoz's arm)

You can not judge the two players on just one match. Owen is a fine player but I believe Henry is THE best striker in the premiership bar none.

It's hard to say really. If you're looking at the best overall player in the Premiership, then it's got to be Henry/Owen fot their consistancy. But Henry mainly, cuz Owen's injured and therefore can't be as consistant.

Or if you're looking at the best performer for club and country in England, then it HAS TO BE David Beckham. He's captained England, and helped them reach Japan and South Korea 2000, with great assists and fantastic free-kicks. But he hasn't been all that consistant for United. So maybe it's Owen. He's been banging them in from left and right, for both club and country. His only problem is his proneness to injury, and that he annoys me!!

So i'm really not sure on that second one. And I haven't watched Henry play for France since Euro 2000.

Personally I think Thierry Henry is technically the better player.

Seeing him against Newcastle tonight, he was outstanding for the first half hour. Goalscorer turnred creater, his little bit of skill for the goal was quality. But we saw the dark side of his game towards the end. He shoudnt really let his temper get the best of him.

Owens Temperment is much better, thats why I would probably rate him higher than Henry. And for someone so young, he has achieved so much.

Beckham is having a well deserved rest at the moment (at least thats what they tell us.) He hasnt exactly been at the top of his game recently. The Utd Midfield looks pritty strong without him; Giggs on the left, keane and scholes in the centre with Veron enjoying a more wide role in Beckhams place. Will Beckham find it hard to fit back into the team? How will this affect his morale for the 2002 World cup?

Owen and Beckham are a two-man show for England. Thier individual talent will be the key to any World cup success in 2002.

As many of you may realise, I have made a mistake in the above paragraph, which comes from part of my topic. England faced Germany a while back and not last Saurday. My Mistake!

Sorry
