I thought I would start a topic so that everyone could talk about who they felt was the footballer of the year, using only premiership players!

In my personal opinion, Michael Owen has shown this year what he is capable of and the fact that he could rule the world. There are a few other players who I was thinking of writing about in this section such as David Beckham, Ryan Giggs, Teddy Sheringham, Steven Gerrard and of course Fabien Barthez, but I decided that Owen has impressed me the most.

Michael Owen is one of the best strikers in the world. If you wanted to watch a player in form, then Michael Owen would be that person. He just can’t seem to stop scoring at the moment, whether he is playing for Liverpool or England. He has scored about 12 goals already this season for Liverpool, and he scored that marvellous hat trick against Germany on Saturday.

As a Liverpool player, Owen has played about 180 times, scoring roughly 99 goals in the process. This is an amazing number of goals to score in that many games and I am 100% that he will score a lot more in the future. In his first season, in the premiership, for Liverpool, he scored 21 goals. The following season saw him score 23, 2 better than the previous season. Like I have said, he has already scored 7 goals this season and we are only 3 premiership games into the new season. I think Owen could break the 30-goal barrier this season quite easily.

Quite frankly, I'm still in shock that he scored that incredible goal against Argentina back in 1998, and to think - 99 goals for Liverpool already says so much about him!

As an England player, Michael Owen has made 32 caps and scored 14 goals. 3 of these goals came against Germany a few moths ago when England stuffed their opposition 5-1. This was a game that England needed to win to make them have a better chance of winning their group and qualifying automatically for the World Cup 2002 Finals, at the time. Owen scored his first hat trick of England and it could not have come against a better team. England had never beaten Germany, in Germany, until Saturday and England proved that they are capable of winning the World Cup. I feel that if Owen keeps playing like he is at the moment, he will keep scoring for his country and could end up easily as England’s best ever goal scorer. Since then, England have qualified for the World Cup Finals as they drew against Greece and Germany could only draw against Finland, although Germany are also through having beaten Ukraine in the Play-Offs.

Michael Owen is still a young player, but he is a player that every team would want in their side, especially now seeing as he can’t stop scoring.

Owen was recently voted European footballer of the year, which is a great achievement for him and it shows that he is capable of becoming the best footballer in the world.

Overall, Owen is simply a fantastic player and a joy to watch.

It'll probably be Henry who wins in the end. Owen's gunna have to learn how both his new potential strike partners play.

And after a brilliant 6-1 win against the Saints, and grabbing a hat-trick, Ruud van Nistelrooy is edging closer towards the being a top 'Player of the Year' candidate!! I think his tally for this season is 17 in all competitions!!! That's only about 3 less than Henry, but that could all change tomorrow.

So at the moment, it could end up like this:

1. Thierry Henry
2. Ruud van Nistelrooy
3. Michael Owen
4. Jimmy-Floyd Hasselbaink
5. Peter Schmeichel

But they probably won't announce the top 5 anyway, only 3.

That maybe true but it is still ONE game. Don't get me wrong, I am a huge fan of Michael Owen - he is a true blessing for our national side. Depsite Hoddle's ridiculous remarks - he is a natural goalscorer if ever there was one. However, I believe Henry contributes far more than just goals. Henry's workrate in phenominal and he makes goals as well as scores them (the recent overhead kick cross against Newcastle was a classic example).

What a strike force if they were playing together up front !!. Especially if he had someone like Sherringham or Bergkamp playing just behind to slot the balls through. What defence could cope with that attacking line-up ??.

If you are looking for flaws in Henry and Owen you would have to say that both strikers are not particulary good in the air.

Actually Alan Shearer is the current model-prffesional mate!! Esecially after the Arsenal - Newcastle game in mid-week. Owen?? NO. To me it seems like he thinks he's the greatest player in the world?? - LOL, you're not mate!! With a minf like this, he can only damage his career. I wonder if he's scared to leave Anfield?? Because of the different cultures in Italy and Spain for example. Deep down inside, he's still just a kid! Playing elsewhere will only improve his abillity, and I think it's something he SHOULD do very soon!!

It wasn't just a match, it was the biggest game in the world (apart from World & Euro cups).

I still believe in Hasselbaink. Especially after his form in Spain and at Leeds. He's the hardest worker in the Chelsea attack, and deserves more than he gets! Chelsea need to start showing they can challenge for trophys, like they did against Liverpool. WHAT A MATCH!!!

I haven't really seen him play for Holland, but when I have he usually scores. He may not be getting the chances to play for his country, with Kluivert and van Nistelrooy the favourites, and younger than him. But he deserves the chances, just like Ronaldo does, coming back from his career-threatening knee injury. If Jimmy-Floyd doesn't get what he wants, then he may even consider quitting the blues!! Unless a 'new Vialli' is installed as manager to bring back the silverware!

I wouldn't mind having Hasselbaink as United's new no.9. Or 19, as Yorke isn't playing like himself anymore!! He looks slow, un-fit and over-due for retirement. He may have made a bad descision in quitting international football last season. That meanas a lower number of matches and less match practice. Which he needs, as he won't be getting enough appearences at United to get 'back-to-his-best'!!

Hasselbaink has the hardest shot in the Premiership, incase you didn't know. And according to his previous managers he has a 'side-foot' that's harder than the many of Europe's top-strikers!! That helps to explain why he's always challenging for the top of the leading scorers chart.

But it doesn't look like he'll get to no.1 this season, due to the team performances of Chelsea. But if they find they're form, and keep on supplying him, then he'll surely turn the top-defences into jelly!! And race away in the scoring charts from Henry and Owen.

Good luck to Jimmy-Floyd Hasselbaink, probably in the next season or two. He has the potential to be no.1, even if Chelsea's form doesn't show it!

I suppose Thiery Henry is the obvious choice, but I think Peter Schmeichel might be in with a chance if he can get Aston Villa into a good league position.

I think technically Henry is the better player. Much better control on the ball. But I think Owen is better at taking chances that come his way. Henry is a better creater, in a sort of Andy cole style with less misses.
