The GBA has received praise and putdowns in equal measure. In this very chat forum I have heard (well, seen) insults being flung back and forth (like a game of Tennis) as individuals take it in turn to attack or defend the new Hand-held. In my opinion, the GBA is a small step (though still a step) toward the future of mobile gaming. I love it’s ‘Old Skool’ charm, it’s nifty look’s and it’s ability to bring you all those classic games of the past.
One thing I don’t love about the GBA however, is the screen. This brings me to the title of this topic, ‘Playing on your GBA = Practising the Karma Sutra?’.
I woke up Sunday tired from starting work at 5:30 on Saturday morning. I was awake, and knew I couldn’t get back to sleep but couldn’t be bothered to get out of bed. There it sat, watching me, calling my name, my GBA. I had recently acquired Breath of Fire on the 13th of December (a day earlier than the release date, thanks SR). Being half way through the game, I was eager to venture further into this magical land of weird monsters (surely drug induced!), amazing spells , titanic battles, and a hero with blue hair(every game should have someone with blue hair. So I picked it up, flicked on the power switch and waited patiently 5 minutes for my eyes to realise there day shift had just started.
When they’d settled into focus, I tilted the screen, not bad, a bit of reflection but I can cope. My arms tire quickly from this unusual position though so I sit up. No, that’s too dark now. I’ll try with my arms hanging over the bed. YAHHHHH, sorry, just saw what I look like early in the morning (and it ain’t a pretty site!) Too much reflection then so I sit, hunched over in my bed (in retrospect, I’m very glad no one walked in when I was in that position, he he). I hear noises coming up the stairs so I quickly re-manoeuvre…….about 50 times. I give. I go down stairs for some breakfast, then, armed with my GBA, sit in the chair in the living room. It’s possibly the ONLY place in my house I can I get a perfect picture. I swear, after a week on a GBA, you’ll have discovered positions you never knew you could perform. So, I’m now a Karma Sutra god thanks to my GBA, a Hand held perfect for gaming and mastering that ancient art of tying loops in your body but still enjoying yourself.
Oh, and Breath of Fire, I recommend it highly. It’s an excellent game that will fit nicely into anyone’s collection. Just don’t bother reading the reviews that will soon start to litter the game’s profile. Is it by chance that as soon a review is featured in a magazine, many tosh heads will simply re-write it and expect people not to notice.
