The PS2 was made public in the United Kingdom now just over a year ago (a year of pain and suffering). The success in that year was perhaps what they were expecting but more perhaps then asked for. Once released back in what weren’t so long ago (just felt like it was), people was originally either complaining or concerned about the price of the years most anticipated electronic device. At a price of £300, not a penny more or less then the launch price of the original Playstation and Dreamcast, the PS2 was sold out in a matter of moments.
Somehow Sony has managed to persuade all of those thousands upon millions of spending their hard earned cash on this console that frankly didn't seem to have anything good to offer (and didn’t). I think you can fairly say that their huge success was partly down to past reputations and another console named Playstation may have already decided what they wanted before they saw this huge, grotesque black object that would be sitting on their lounge floors for countless hours and getting used more then the phone that will be needed to order all those pizzas for when your mates come around for a lads night in....in front of the PS2.
With a start slower then anyone would have anticipated the PS2 never showed any signs of achieving great goals or being remembered for anything in particular. Its games were nothing new, just mainly consisted of sequels and unoriginal games that had been seen before but this time around in a different context. The one thing that amazed us though and could not be disputed for was it's graphical capability (shame it will soon be outdated ah, ah).
You can't deny the immense achievement that Sony has done in the console market. Creating a console that beat the almighty computer giants of Sega (but did it deserve to?) without effort, doing better than a console twice as powerful created by Nintendo and still after 6 years games are still being designed for it. That was the success of the PS; our main concern is the PS2 and that is something else that will probably end up in the same way (ha wishful thinking).
Dropping the price from £300 down to an affordable £200 was their first wise move since the release back in November 2000 (actually not releasing it would have been a wise move). It was their first signs of showing their fear over the GameCube and Xbox and also their thought into making the festive season something for all young and old to remember, something that poor old Sega never did.
Although the Dreamcast was of the same ability as the PS2 it never caught the publics eye with either its games or its ability. It's timing was all wrong and they obviously forgot about what happened last time they went up against Sony. Maybe something to do with Sony being loaded to the brim may have something to do with their success, maybe their reputation from the previous Playstation could be the answer or it's ability to impress, but one thing is certain and that is that after a whole year of waiting for something big to happen, it finally has.
I do hate to criticise that poor machine as after all it did produce some mighty fine games and never did any harm to anyone. It just seemed at the end of the day that Sega weren't capable of accomplishing the challenge to obtain the crown, console king.
It seems in the months in which nothing was happening the games designers were secretly preparing for a game war, fought on the same console. Konami have done it once again and with the exception of Gran Turismo 3 and Grand Theft Auto 3 this is the only other PS2 game that has made us reach into our pockets before even having to think about how it will play or look (because if we did we wouldn’t buy it :D). Luckily for us, they have decided to stick to the same layout as ISS Evolution rather then the layout the first PS2 game was like, which quite frankly was awful (it’s a general trend). Another one to look out for is almighty Devil May Cry, from the legendary Resident Evil creator Shinji Mikami (who is doing something else on another console can’t quite remember what though). The game follows Dante, a half-man, half-demon hybrid who is on a mission to eradicate evil. The Resident Evil designers have been busy producing what seems to be one of the most anticipated games of the year, Devil May Cry (or may not as the case maybe).
The genius' that brought us Max Payne for the PC have also been busy at work and have released it for the PS2, money making scene or not does not affect that this now and will always remain to be one of the games that changed the way they are made for time to come. It caused a huge fuss a few months back and by the sounds of things is doing just the same thing now. With bullets flying in all directions and scenes you'd only tend to find in a John Woo movie there is no doubting the awesome ability and enjoyment that Max Payne can offer.
The highly awaited Smackdown 3, kicked it's way onto the market with a BANG and although people found little difference from it's predecessor, I can safely say that this has made no odds to the satisfaction that you can get from this game, especially when you find yourself one on one against Limp Bizkit's Fred Durst, the fun is just endless (maybe I should of added I hated it, nah).
The irresistible Grand Theft Auto 3 is out on the shelves and being loaded into Santa's sleigh faster then you can steal a car. The violent, controversial and damn right brilliant game that shows us crime really does pay has already caught the eye of every over 18 PS2 owner in the country with Play magazine giving it a review score of 98% saying "Only a pact with the Devil could produce a game of this perfection". And as far as I'm concerned, no truer words have ever been spoken (except maybe “get a Gamecube”).
You can take to the 3D streets fully loaded with whatever you may pick up on your travels. Using anything and everything available to you to complete the necessary 'job' until you've worked your way up the crime syndicate, and then you can set back and enjoy the rest of the ride. Quite possibly one of the best game ever made and without a doubt one of the most violent and pleasing games you are ever likely to play (did I mention a bit tedious?).
Soldier of Fortune, Half-Life, Silent Hill 2, Ace Combat 4, Medal of Honour Front Line, SSX Tricky and James Bond 007 Agent Under Fire are just other games that you may expect to hear about this Christmas. Each one showing great potential, immense original games and at exceptional prices they just can't afford to be missed.
With Christmas and hundreds of games just around the corner, with no competition to be seen for the next few months you can't deny that the PS2 will be having a very happy Christmas along with the rest of us who are lucky enough to own this piece of art. (By the way Gamecube will be better).
Another successful unbiased post!

This is a DRINGO post remember!
This is very unbiased for him!
The PS2 was made public

It was launched over a year ago, but was announced, and "made public" probably a year or more before that - so at least two years ago.
>(a year of pain and suffering).
Is this the start of another unbiased viewpoint?

Didn`t the Playstation initially start at 400, and then swiftly drop to 300?
Also, if we`re talking "penny more, penny less" then surely you could mut the correct launch price - £299.99
>the PS2 was sold out in a matter of moments.
Which answer Skull kids comment just below. Each console sold all their units. Thats all we know. The amount will not matter in the long run, as it was just down to who had the most for launch.
Somehow Sony has

I guess you did only say you were "trying to be unbiased". Obviously with that comment you are failing.

It was partly due to the PSone. Why not? You`ve got an advantage so use it... It wasn`t the only reason though. Game potential, dvd players, online propositions... everything a next gen console needs.
With a start slower then anyone would have anticipated the PS2 never showed

You what??? It sold every copy it could produce. They were out of factories, and into homes without ever touching the shelves.
> Its games were nothing new, just mainly consisted of sequels
Two of the best titles in the launch were not sequels, as well as many other less good games. The launch line up contained very few altogether. You are really talking out of the wrong hole now.
and
> unoriginal games that had been seen before but this time around in a different

Yes well if we numbered each mario game "in a different context" we`d be well over a hundred now.
I was going to reply to each of the next paragraphs but I`m beginning to think you only did this as a joke to wind people up. This is the kind of topic that gets produced everytime some newbie arrives - but they soon get the hang of things and settle in. How long have you been here? No doubt ages, and yet you can still make topics like this.
Dropping

This is somthin I find very interesting.
The price of the PS2 has remained $299 in the USA since Launch. I foind this particulary amazing considering the two other consoles have been released.
What does mean? Sony dont have any fear from Microsoft or Nintendo? Or is it just a pshcological thing? Pricing thier console the same price as the X-box and thus making people think that the PS2 is as powerful as the x-box. When it is relatively obvouis that the x-box is far more powerful.
