Some might say the Dreamcast, which is undoubtedly a superb piece of kit. But I would say it's near-death now, and doesn't really count as a 'competitor,' if you will. Now lets see...the PS2 came out, November last year was it? November 2000. It is now December 2001, over a year later, and still the PS2 is the only next-gen console out there. Microsoft have a confirmed date for the X-Box, which I believe is somewhere in March. Another 4 or so months away. That's a year and a half afte the PS2 was launched.
The GameCube? Well, Mario and all his annoying little friends may not be appearing over here until the Autumn! That's almost 2 years after the PS2!
Now maybe the other consoles can offer more graphically (not sure though, not a 'specs' person if you know what I mean,) and even if they did, it wouldn't be much. Maybe the GameCube offers the best platformers, and is the only console where you will find Mario. I'm sure die-hard Nintendo fans have either imported or are still waiting, but think of the others...
What of the fan who wasn't sure of which console to buy? Is this person willing to wait over a year? No! He's going to go out and buy a PlayStation 2, RIGHT NOW, already with many AAA titles to come, and more to be released over the Christmas period, and into the new year. What of the N64 owner, who liked his console, but is really willing to buy anything? It's a PS2 for him, most certainly!
And look...the father of the PS2, the PlayStation, is still bringing out quality games such as Syphon Filter 3! While the N64 is releasing on average a third of a game every month! WWF No Mercy is still in the top 10 for N64!
If we fast forward to the release of the GameCube. We will have a small games console, with around 5 decent games on offer, for £199.99. On the other hand, there's the PS2, already with over 30 AAA titles, lots of other great games AND it comes with a DVD Player, also for £199.99. Now, surely the right choice is obvious for the casual gamer, or even the gamer who was looking forward to the GameCube, but realised the PS2 would offer more!
I mean, already the PS2 has sold bucket-loads over here, and I know from personal experience that former 'Nintys' are sick of waiting, and have opted for the PS2 (a mate of mine has done exactly this.) I really believe that the GameCube will be a failure-maybe not in Japan or the USA, but over here it is possible, There's no doubt it will offer some amazing stuff, but can keep people (who already own a PS2) afford to shell out another £300 for a GC with a couple of games? Supposedly, GC games will cost around £50-most new PS2 games are at least a tenner cheaper than that on the Internet.
So, while all of us lucky PS2ers are busily playing on THPS3, Devil May Cry, GTA3, 007, SSX Tricky, Airblade, Max Payne, Jak and Daxter, Half-Life and soon to come the one and only Metal Gear Solid 3, N64 owners will still be playing the 'latest release' Mario Pary 3! I believe Nintendo have done their reputation no good by treating us as though we don't matter, and I can see many people becoming sick of it, and buying a PS2 just so they can get back to what they enjoy doing, playing games. And that is something, that over here in the UK, Nintendo are failing to offer at the moment. Sony however, with their PlayStation 2, are, and with great success.

Yeah spot on mate, sony is not only a brandname in the games industry but lso in many other electronical areas, where as Bill Gates is just the bloke who causes our computer to come up with annoying errors and blue screens !! :)

The PS2 has an advantage of still being very powerfull. The Emotion Engine really does some magic which leaves the X-Box and GC with equal graphics to the PS2. The graphics on the DC werent as good as PS2 good do. X-Box may have a graphical edge over the GC and PS2 but not by much. X-Box is also supose to be easy to develope for compared to the PS2.
Still the PS2 wont be put to an early grave as there are tons of AAA titles out now and coming out. This christmas sees PS2 and probably Sony having there best christmas line up of games ever. PS2 has a massive user base which will still keep growing and growing even with the X-Box and GC available.
Everybody knows that the PS1 was an absolute success as its still being sold today with games still in development. Sony has become a name people can trust, so people will rather part with there money for a PS2 than the other consoles. Its also £100 cheaper than X-Box and could even get cheaper nearer the release date of the X-Box or GC. If the PS2 was £150 and X-Box was £300, alot of people would be tempted away from the X-Box to the PS2. The GC may have a rough time as people will always remember the failure of the N64 and wouldnt want to spend out £200 on a console that may follow in the path of its younger brother.
If Ninty or Microsoft do a little magic marketing then people may well be selling their PS2s pretty soon, especially as both consoles will be out before May.
Alternatively, these consoles won't be available until after the usual console buying season, so it may be that the PS2 has a headstart there. But what of next christmas? Well, we shall have to wait and see and no one can really predict what will happen as even now the games market can change in a moment.
