Pop dream is over for Rik
Pop Idol's heavyweight hero Rik Waller today pulled out of the TV competition after he was told he risked causing permanent damage to his vocal cords.
In a bizarre twist, the withdrawl of 20-stone Waller, 20, has given Popstars dropout Darius Danesh a last-minute reprieve.
Rik had been suffering from the flu for a couple of weeks but had been battling on.
Today, Rik's father Kris, 52, said: "To say he is devastated is an understatement."

Big Rik Waller has been told by doctors to stop singing - or risk losing his voice forever. A top Harley Street throat specialist told Rik that he has a serious throat infection and shouldn't sing in this week's show. Rik will drop out of this week's show and with any luck, return next week. Dubbed 'the Fat Bloke' in an email campaign, Rik won loads of fans for his fantastic voice and determination.
Last night Rik said 'I've only ever had one thing in my life - and that is my voice. I'm not going to risk losing it. I've had a sore throat for a fortnight and I've lost my voice. I realised I was in trouble on Thursday and told the production crew I would have to drop out completely. Fortunately, I've been given a week to rest my voice and I hope I'll be better to sing next week. I need to rest completely and get myself together for next week.'
I personally think the bloke who sung last week should have won it as in my opinion he has the best voice out of the lot and a lot of people will be taking Riks side because of his weight just like with Gareth because of his lisp.
Anyway, I wanted the fat bloke to win simply *because* he doesn't look like your standard pop idol. He does have a fantastic voice, and I feel that he should have won.
Come on Gareth!! (I'm chearing for him as he's from my city)
That's a disappointment. If he'd won he could've really changed the music scene...unbelievable.
