Just got back from an interview at Cambridge (of all places!).

On the way there, there were no fewer than 9 accidents on the A14(!), and on the way back I was stuck at Leicester Rail Station for 40mins...

Anyway, enough of the grumbling:

For those of you who don't know me (I don't usually stray this side of the gaming forums, despite the length of time I've been on the site!), I'm hoping to do Computer Science at uni.

The interviews were quite straight forwards... I had 3 in total:

1) General: Why do you want to study at Cambridge; what other interests do you have etc, etc. In my case this was a very informal chat that was quite interesting

2) Subject specific: They asked me about following algorithms and probablilities... very simple maths (esp. seeing as I'm studying TRIPLE maths at A levels!!!:!:!!)

3) A while back I was told to read a particular book on computer science... this interview was about the maths in this book.... which was challenging, but because you are prompted at various stages it's easy to get through...

So there you have it! My interviews... I thought I did quite well... especially compared to some people who games the following answers to questions:

QU: What books do you read to keep up to date with the subject

ANS1: I don't enjoy reading- it doesn't do anything for me

ANS2: I don't really read much... for my computing coursework I have to do a bit of programming, so i read a bit of this one programming book... errrr... and that's all....

Yer, I heard Exeter is really nice...

Oh, and all unis have poor halls... the ones I stayed in at Cambrisge had no heating!

I'm doing computer science at Exeter. It's a great place, I really like it. Some of the halls of residence are a bit crap, but then I haven't really seen many others. There's plenty to do round here, too. As well as more than enough pubs and clubs to keep you busy every night of the week, there are plenty of nice places to eat, decent shops, and there's a go-karting place within taxi-distance. Paintballing, too, if you like that.

The campus is excellent, too. Lots of trees, and millions of squirrels. Decent sports hall, (lots of clubs there to join). There's plenty to do that I can't remember (I'm not a tourist brochure, y'know!)

And most importantly, the workload isn't too bad ;)

2nd choice was warwick... i have a AAB offer there. Also:

Imperial College (AAA, and i don't want to live in london!)
UCL (AAB)
Birmingham (BBB... just a back up)
Edinburgh (needed one more uni, and this was in the top 10!!!)

I had an interview at Cambridge, about 2 years ago. Seems such a long time ago now!

I didn't get on too well though... they asked me some nasty questions, here are a few exerts form my interview.... as far as I can remember:

"So, you're only doing three A -levels. What do you do with all the spare time that gives you?"

(You barstewards *ahem*. What sort of a question is that? Ah well, honesty works best)
"Um, I like to relax, play video games with friends. I do a bit of reading, and I've started learning to program."

"Can you tell me, five events of worldwide significance that have occured in the last year?"

(eh? You what? I don't watch the news. I'm a lazy but smart sixteen year old kid.)
-I manage to think of three-
"That's all I can think of, sorry."

"It's not bad. You got three. You could have mentioned others, like the Paddington train crash"

(Oh bollards. How could I forget that? I hate you, you patronising conceited little man)
"Oh yeah."

"So, these are your GCSE grades. How do you feel about them?"

(Couldn't really care less, but I can't tell you that. Are you going to ask me about the 'D' in RE, or shall I start on that first? I wonder if Cambridge has any applicants with D's in their GCSE grades?)

"I did well on the subjects that interested me - Maths and sciences. I didn't really bother so much with the others."

Guess what?

I didn't get in. But I was relieved more than dissapointed. Me no like work. Exeter rulez!
