The first time I felt it, was playing Super Mario World. Just sitting there, turning the beloved SNES on, just to watch the chirpy hills in the background, bounce up and down on Yoshi, and explore the magical worlds. Then, it was Ocarina Of Time. This was the greatest. It just blew me away, gave me something to live in for weeks on end. It was all I did from afternoon to night, after school.
Now, finaly, at long long last, the feeling has come back. Metroid Prime has brought it back and with a vengeance. All weekend I blasted and explored my way through the fantastic canyons, cliffs, temples and caverns of Tallon IV. Not since the opening of Hyrule Field had I felt so happy at a simple piece of plastic. These are the real times, the places where Nintendo merge storytelling and disbelief with emotion and reality. You know its a game, but its more than that. Its an experiance you only get a few times. Ever.
Ever since OOT, no other game had quite filled that feeling for me. Mario Sunshine came damn close, but it did not quite encapsulate the wonder that OOT did in me. Then on Saturday (after an agonising wait) I got to play Metroid Prime. Oh yes. It was back. I was once again immersed in worlds far away, playing to explore things. The storyline may not (as usual) be the greatset ever, but the game itself is so good, that you don't care.
Thank you Nintendo, and thank you Retro.
:)
Gonna get Metroid Prime soon though.
And listening to the load game screen music.
It looks really good in the little cutscene where Meta Ridley flies overhead.
MP is weird. It doesn't quite have stand out moments like Hyrule field, but as a whole....it just gels incredibly well.
They aren't straight, there are random bricks lying about and stuff. They rule. They trick you too, you cna looka tone wall and think "hmmmmm could this be something" but then you realise it isn't. Or you try and do soemthing on the wall but it doesn't work.
Walls, oh yes.
The way you can see Samus' face reflected in the visor when there's an explosion quite close to you.
