A game that single handedly saved the N64 in Europe, one of the gaming classics that will be remembered and played for many many years to come. I am referring to Rare's Goldeneye and what a game it was. Of course being such a smash hit there needs to be a sequel and after failing to get hold of the Bond license again they begun work on their own Shooter Perfect Dark.

Perfect Dark took the best bits of Goldeneye improved them and threw a huge amount of extras on top and it was a gaming classic just like Goldeneye but for some reason it never set the world alight like Goldeneye did.

And this is where we come to the future as most Perfect Dark nuts will know the sequel to Perfect Dark is being worked on and it is heavily rumored to be a 3rd person shooter. Well I have decided to look at the pros and the cons of this idea and discuss if Rare are doing the right thing?

Perfect Dark never did as well as Goldeneye because Goldeneye refreshed the First Person Shooter market and every shooter (bar Doom and Quake) copied it since such as Half Life, Timesplitters, The World is Not Enough and Halo. Major First Person Shooters such as Halo base heavily around Goldeneye with the hit areas, intelligent guards and puzzle elements. Rare could make Perfect Dark and continue its domination of the First Person Shooter market or it could do something few people have dared to do, take on Metal Gear Solid.

Metal Gear Solid 2 is a stunning game on the PS2 (well it better be) and Nintendo have very little to rival it the use of stealth mixed with an involving plot and clever puzzles made it difficult to come up against. Perfect Dark used stealth to full effect as well but the first person view made the game feel and play very different to Konami's efforts.

You must be aware this isn't dangerous territory for Rare. When it comes to Third Person games such as Jet Force Gemini prove they can do it and also this won't be the first third person Perfect Dark game. If Rare can go face to face with Metal Gear Solid and beat it this will be a big win for Nintendo.

But if Rare leave the First Person Shooter market how will Nintendo keep hold of it? Will Rare develop another FPS? Can Metroid keep FPS fans interested with Nintendo's system when faced against Halo, Timesplitters and Red Faction? The fact is Metroid is looking a bit worrying Nintendo having to get involved to make sure it will be a hit. As for RARE making another FPS??? Killer Instinct maybe, Conker's other bad day virtually definite and a Banjo sequel unquestionable but a brand new FPS? Not impossible the new Perfect Dark team might not be the same as the last one and therefore this team could well be working on a new FPS but is this likely?

Goldeneye set new standards for First Person shooters, others met it or failed in the process, Perfect Dark extended those standards I’m sure Perfect Dark 0, After Dark, A Shot In The Dark whatever it may be called will set even higher standards which other developers must reach and beat.

In conclusion what Rare have in store for us is unknown if it is another Third Person stealth game (like the GBC game perhaps) it would be great to finally get a rival to Metal Gear Solid but if it is a First Person shooter then it continue the awesome franchise that Rare had started with Goldeneye but Rare have only let slip that the Perfect Dark sequel will be something very new and that it may not contain Joanna at all... Interesting.
