With all these people being slaves to nu-metal (I know that's going to make me very unpopular…) I thought I'd write some reviews of some alternative rock that isn't metal.

Pennywise- 'Land of the free?'

Pennywise are and always have been an awesome band, thriving off their positive mental attitude, pointing out things which are wrong, but never aimlessly moaning about how bad this or that is. Land of the Free? is their most politicised album to date. After their early days of socio-political issues, then the dark days of 'Full Circle', the album released after band member Jason Matthew Thirsk died, and then came 'Straight Ahead' which included a mixture of political and social themed songs.

Now comes the dawn of a new age for Pennywise. Their sound has changed, and althogh it is relatively subtle, die hard fans will instantly recognise the change, which is reminiscent of the different vocal (deeper, and more gravelly) style heard on 'Full Circle' after 'About Time'.

The first song is ‘Time Marches On’ and is an awesome start. The album really hits the ground running. I won’t go through a track by track analysis of the album, because I will only be praising every track. Seriously, there are no weak tracks to this album. Just about every track is stand out, and simply amazing. The only two which I feel aren’t quite as good as the rest (although they are still great tracks, but they are just not quite up to the awesome standard of the others in my opinion) are ‘Set me Free’ and ‘WTO’.

Every other track to me is simply stunning. Pennywise always sound passionate, and this album is no exception, with fast, heavy tracks and incredible vocals, that range from as emotional and passionate as you like to venom dripping with anger. This latest album also benefits from great production. It really does sho on tracks like ‘Land Of The Free?’ and ‘Enemy’. There is even a track, ‘Who’s on your side’ which is co-written by Brett Gurewitz, Bad Religion member (he has now re-joined Bad Religion), and owner of Epitaph records. This track is just as incredible as the rest.

Pennywise are just as amazing as ever. You won’t be disappointed by this album. Get it and hear the sound of a real band not some manufactured rubbish.

If you like fast, heavy Punk Rock get this. If you like political awareness in bands, get this. If you like anti-authoritarian songs, get this. If you like Punk Hardcore, get this. If you like Steps or S-Club 7, then stick to the radio.

Well done, I secretly believe, well not secretly anymore that the track by track reviews ain't winning anything. They're very helpful to anyone who's got the album, but let's face it if you pick up a copy of NME, Uncut, Q or Kerrang you won't see a track by track review.

I'm not saying that they haven't been well written, I just think it's overkill, in some cases, to go through every single track, particularly with some rappers who have about 40 tracks to an album. Long live the short and sweet review!

Just realised I won FAD for this!

Strange, as I thought my Fugazi review had a better chance of winning... Oh well, I'm not complaining!!!

Oh, and if you want to get into Fugazi, see my review of their album 'The Argument' which is their latest. It is in this forum, still on the front page somewhere. So check it out.

If you like Pennywise you should check out 98Mute.

They have Jason Matthew Thirsk's (Pennywise Member, RIP 1967-1996) brother on drums and are an awesome band too. More of a Hardcore sound than Pennywise, and an amazing band. Fletcher Dragge of Pennywise also is invovlved with 98Mute, helping to mix and develop tracks and stuff like that.

98Mute have a new album out soon I think, and 'Slow Motion Riot' is an awesome album!

The Clarity JEW era was a much better JEW preformance altogether.

When I say Jimmy Eat World I mean clarity-era Jimmy Eat World. Not the new album, which is good, but isn't a patch on Clarity.

yeah heard of both those. Must say I have felt inclined to get the album by Rival Schools... Maybe get it in the inevitable January Sale after Xmas.

Oh, and have you heard of Fugazi? Awesome post-hardcore band, see my review of their latest as well, if you're interested.

Wonderful...
... and so easy-to-use even for a technophobe like me. I had my website up in a couple of hours. Thank you.
