"Has PS2 underachieved since its launch??"

Hey im just interested in hearing everyones opinion on whether they feel let down by the ps2 since its launch. I got a ps2 as soon as it came out here in U.K and though there weren't that many good launch games i just thought that would be becasue the console had just launched. Over a year later and in my opinion there are only a handful of games that i would consider buying for the ps2. I understand that there are now a lot of good games coming out for christmas but i cant help feeling that the ps2 has not matched up to my expectations. What do you all think?

The average lifespan og a console is about 5 years if it's doing well... On this basis, the PS3 should be here around 2004/2005 unless they are pushed to launch it earlier.. i.e. declining sales (Saturn?)

May be it's all about the black console doom theory?

yeah i agree that ps2 has probably got the best group of games for christmas by far and also that this will probably the best christmas ever for console fans who own a ps2 or are getting one. I think my problem might be some of the great titles that came out for the ps2 like ssx and GT3 never appealed to me because those types of games no matter how good bore me. Im bored of GT3 now and to be honest i never play it anymore. The only sports game so far that has appealed to me and i still love it is madden 2001 and now madden 2002. I am getting pro evolution soccer though for christmas. Dont get me wrong though i think the ps2 is great now i mean who wouldnt with all the amazing titles coming out for christmas i just feel slightly dissapointed with its first year. By the way has anoyone got pro evo soccer and is it any good??

I've been perfectly happy with mine. SSX lasted with support of other games until GT3, which lasted until fur fighters, which lasted until GTA3, which lasted until Tricky. I've never had a bored moment with it.

It underachvied at the start. Because of the lack of good games. There were a few good games at launch and then nothing till Z.O.E well for me anyway. So I had my 3 launch games on 24th November and didnt get another game till 23rd March(Z.O.E Released). From then on there has been a steady release of good games which has ended up with probably the best christmas line up for any console ever. GTA3, SSX Tricky, Tony Hawks 3, Silent Hill 2, Jak andDaxter, Devil May Cry, Half Life, Agent Under Fire, Pro Evo, and even GT3(People who are getting there PS2 this christmas may get this).

So the PS2 is more than achieving.

Strangely enough i posted my thoughts on this topic just 40 min before this topic was started in my 'Time of Purification' thread... i *did* think the PS2 had underachieved i suppose, not consciously, it's just that i wasn't overly excited by the games i had seen. However, after a slow start with a few good titles (onimusha for one) i think that plenty of good games are beginning to spill onto the PS2 market now, and i'm finally getting excited about the console... I now feel like i want to go out and buy a PS2 magazine to see some screenshots, etc... whereas before i wouldn't have dreamt of handing over *real Money* for such a thing...

So what are you saying? Are you telling me that DC, playstation, N64 all had really good top class AA titles on there release? I think not!

In my mind you cant say the PS2 has underachieved, as what are you comparing it to? You cant really compare it to DC or 64 as there not next gen consoles. When it came out, i think lots of people were over estimating what any next gen console could do, remember that DC, PS1 and so on were all class on gameplay, and i think that we have got to a stage where by game play can not be changed all that much as the years go by. Sure with the extra processing power the new machines offer more can be desplayed on the screen, but all games on all consoles revolve around old games style of play. And that is so far what the PS2 has offered, all the class gameplay that PS1 gave us.

Where it has improved so far is the graphics, and face it, thats what all next gen consoles are all about, the way there games look and the PS2 has delivered in this area.

When the GC and X-box come out, i can just see the same topics starting, look at all the crap launch titles, its happened with all the consoles that have ever come out.

In answer to your question......No, its had a great year, and the new one has started off great!

If the ps2 was in development then for that amount of years what is sonys excuse for not having an A list line of title becasue i think we have to agree that there was the odd launch game that was good and that was dissapointing

The PS2 wasn't rushed my no means... it took 5 years to design and build! The Gamecube took the same ammount of time and for some reason, even though it's a cut down PC, so did the XBOX.

Manufacturers such as Sony begin the next console development stage at least a year before the current one is launched so if you think about it, the PS3 in theory is already 3 years into it's development!!

Rushed... I think not!!

i think they started designing the PS2 in mid 99 (correct me if I'm wrong) but what's been bothering me is if Sony are already designing the PS3 to put them ahead of the Xbox and "broaden the playstation name" then will it be as rushed as the PS2, only time will tell.
