Sony, in the UK celebrated the end of November as being the first year of the PS Two’s life, the console not only sold in huge numbers here, but its sold millions all over the world and its has even gone further past Sony’s expectations on the number that they thought would sell. So, they have every right to be happy with the PS Two so far, and they are probably about to become a whole lot happier. Its that time of year that in all industries to do with selling goods such as gifts ect, that they make a lot of money, Christmas is the time when these company’s expect to make a lot of money with people buying things for each other, and the people that perhaps look most forward to this time of year, are those connected with the gaming industry. They make millions of pounds here in the UK at Christmas, people go out to by games for there family friends and so on, and there are always plenty to choose from as this is the time when lots of the most highly anticipated games are released, and just like most products, shops such as SR offer great prices and console bundles which always pleases the customers. So, to my point, why should Sony be showing off a big smile on there faces this Christmas, because of the lack of competition, and the success of PS Two.

GC and X-box are not expected till next year, so the new Next Gen consoles pose no threat to Sony. Many of the loyal Nintendo fans that were holding out for the GC are starting to become a little annoyed in the way that they are being treated, GC has been put back to the summer and with the lack of anything truly amazing coming out on the N64 anymore, many do not want to wait and therefore turning to other consoles such as PS Two. This means that there are more numbers to add to the PS Two user base that were not expected, and by the time GC is out, PS Two will have many many more top quality titles all ready out that not as huge a number will go out and get an GC, but if you are holding out, good look to you.
Again, the X-box too will not be out till around March time, so that there is no way that Microsoft are going to be competing with Sony in the console market this Christmas. So far we have seen some good stuff from the X-box, as we have from the GC, but X-box again suffers from the fact that its still a few months off and some people are just not willing to wait, gamers are wanting there next gen consoles now rather than later and with Christmas on the horizon, and the best time to be a gamer is now, they will just go out and buy the best console that is available now.

The only other real competition out there comes in the form of the Game boy Advance and what remains of the DC market. Although Sega announced the stop in production of the DC, there are still many quality games coming out for it, most recently Shemue Two and Crazy Taxi Two. With many shops still having DC’s in stock and many games that are cheap to buy, DC maybe PS Two’s biggest rival at this time. However, PS1 did have a bigger user base than DC did so there many more people that are playing the Sony machines meaning that anyone with a PS1 are more likely to opt for a PS Two. Also, Sega have recently agreed to make as many as 7 more games from the Sega range to be on PS Two, which go along side Crazy Taxi, Resident Evil Code V X and Virtua Fighter 4, Sega are becoming more an ally than an enemy.
As for the GBA, although in the same line of business, both wanting to sell there games more than the other, they are in different leagues. GBA, while it will be able to work with the GC (when its out) is a hand held gaming device and does not really effect the sales of consoles or there games. Consoles have always had a bigger user base, and while the release of GBA will have increased the user base of hand held devices, its still not much to knock consoles on the head. Hand held devices are also known as gadgets, and Sony already make enough gadgets that the little money they loose to GBA in the gaming industry they more than make up for in the other side of there market.

But that’s enough of there competition, what have Sony on the gaming front got to offer us this Christmas.

Well, not just the PS Two, but PS1 too. Many say that the PS1’s life has ended, but that’s not true, while its not on a high either there are still some good games coming out on it. PS1 at the moment has the biggest user base, and this number is still growing as the PS1 is seen as the best first console to a new gamer. It has many hundreds of games already available for it, and many of them are true classics such as Metal Gear Solid, and VR missions, ISS Evo Two, Driver Two and lots more. Lots of the games too are already very cheap to buy now, some as low as £9.99 and when there are games like Driver 1 at this price, that’s a bargain. Also, some of the new games that have sold lots of copies have become very cheap too as they have turned platinum and can be bought for £20. With the PS1 changing to PSone, a smaller version of it, this sparked off a new phase of interest for the 5-year-old console, and that interest is still there now. For this Christmas there are some big games out, Tony Hawks 3, Fifa 2002 and of course, the phase of the moment, the Harry Potter game. These are coming out on PS Two as well, but there are many more PS1 owners who are still going to want them, and so they have been given them. The Psone’s themselves are selling at a very cheap price, with the monitor too, and with the PS1’s life drawing to an end, with the games also cheap, this could be the last big chance for there owners to cash in on it at this time of year.

But the PS Two is where Sony are going to make most of there money this Christmas. As I said earlier, there is no competition for the PS Two really at this moment in time, and so when a buyer walks into a shop the first thing they are going to see are the Sony stalls. On TV at the moment there are many adverts for games and the console its self being shown, though some of these are strange, they do there job in creating a lot of interest in the PS Two. Gamers from all over know that at the moment the PS Two is going through a gold patch, and one that looks to continue for a long time to come. There have been lots of top quality games released in the past months, games that really show off what the console can do, games such as GTA 3, Pro Evo, Wipeout Fusion , Silent Hill Two , Smackdown 3, Fifa 2002 and many many more, just look at the top 20 games here on SR, all these are in there, along with lots of others. But the good games don’t stop there, just released are SSX tricky, Tony Hawks 3 which are both already very popular games, and with the vast improvement seen in them are going to sell very well. Also coming soon is Devil May Cry, Crash 5, which are again, 2 games that are massively anticipated. The console itself though is a very good buy, its recently just been put down to £200 which is very good for what you get, not only does it keep in the PS Two and PS1 franchise meaning that games can be bought for both consoles, it can be used for music CD’s and DVD’s where there is a massive market which can only be good for Sony.

This could very well be one of Sony’s most profitable Christmas’s, they have 2 consoles in the market that are both very popular, and the user base for both of them is always increasing. But not only is it good for them, its very good for us, Sony PS Two owners, the choice in the games we get is something to really smile about, and this Christmas will be a lot better in the games we get than what we had on offer last Christmas. Not only that, the games are being retailed at around £35, and even cheaper than that for some games here on SR, meaning that we can have more than we may usually get, then, the more we buy, and the more Sony sell, the cheaper the goods become which not only is better for us, its better for Sony as there selling there consoles, its better for the shops as more are being sold, and its better for the gaming industry. What a great Cycle that is!

So if you see anyone from Sony with a big smile on there face, you know why, like wise if you see any PS2 owner with a huge grin on there face, you know why.

Merry Christmas!!

Pro.

I'm not convinced about the link-up between GBA and the Gamecube. There are a lot of possibilities, but i just havnt heard enough about it. All i have heard about is the link up between the Sonic games, thats about it.

Bah!

Rub it in then. You get YOUR next gen console whis Christmas and we don't!

Sony have got a big advantage this Christmas.
The only comptetion it has is the GBA, which like you said, isn't really competing seeing as Mr Casual will most likely get both.

Still, I'm sure that Nintendo and Microsoft will be more than happy with the profits they make in EVERY damn country bar ours!

Well done for winning.
