is the games industry going to better the classics?

Half Life, Deus Ex (in my opinion not very good - yet still hailed as a classic) Planescape:Torment etc.

All classics, and there are more. I shall use Half Life as my example. Recently AvP2 was reviewd in PCZone. I read the review, and found the reviewer thought that the game was better than Half-Life. In a second opinion, another did not.

It got me thinking - Half Life cam out a few years ago, and really had nor opposition because it came out at a time when the values of Doom still lived on in Quake 1 and 2. Not much AI, blast everything that moves etc etc. Now that a game that looks and plays as good as 'Alien v Predator 2' comes out, and there is still discussion as to if it is better than Half-Life, I wonder what the games indusrtry is going to do.

So far, Half-Life has been the Star Wars trilogy of computers - ever since it came out, most people have been trying to imitate it, not improve on it - that is my point, how is it going to be improved upon, apart from graphics and sound wise - I mean in AI, level desgin, and any unusual features - Red Faction came out claiming to be better with its Geo-Mod tech, but it was nothing like as good as Half-Life - or even the first AvP.

On paper, a new FPS to claim Half Lifes crown, of both single and multiplayer gaming (due to counter strike) needs to combine the variety of Unreal Tournament, and the beauty etc of AVP2 - y et people have tried to do this, and to no avail - I personaly think a new game would have to feature incredible AI, and a new way of telling the story 6to entrap the player:

What are your thoughts?

If a game is going to beat Half Life, then it will need to be really good. As I have already said, I haven't played AVP2 yet, so I can't comment on that.

Half Lifes on going plot was one of the major aspects of the games, so if the games can have this, and make the plot very involving, then we could have a potential Half Life beater.

As you have already said, incredible enemy AI would also be a factor. The AI of the aliens and Soldiers in Half Life was very good back then, with the aliens making a run for it when attacked and then coming back to have a crack again. And the soldiers were brilliant, talking to each other, running for cover etc.

Graphics aren't a problem as Half Life is over three years old now, and the graphics are getting dated.

That's my opinion.

Any more posters - please talk about the topic, not Deus EX!

As I said, it is all down to taste. I love Deux Ex, even though I have only played the first level. My mate is constantly erging me to play it more because it is so great, and I certainly plan on doing so, it's just finding the time.

I agree - but Deus Ex- what is the hype about?

Player freedom? yes, in a small cofined space that you are not allowed out of!

All the environments look the same - i.e all at night, boring metallic slabs of concrete - the weapons are the most uninspired ever - Bang! erg, ow!

And althoug hit is quite long, it is very very easy to complete with the save option - a boring nit picking mettallic cold game - But i agree with your point about the gamer getting more good games!

First of all, I would like to ask, don't you think Deux Ex is good. If so, you are the first person who has said that, but theen again, I suppose it all boils down to taste.

Anyway, about Half Life. Yep, developers have been trying to imitate it ever since it came out, and haven't succeeded very well. But, isn't it the same with several games in other genres.
For example, let's take the Gran Turismo series. Now, this is the Star Wars trilogy of racing games, and developers have been constantly trying to imitate it. Some games haven't come to far off. Metropolis Street Racer is the first I will mention, as it is the game that comes closest. This game may be a little different to Gran Turismo but is still the only racing game I can think of that comes close to taking the racing crown off Gran Turismo (3).

Let's take the Platform genre now. Two characters come into mind first: Sonic and Mario. These are two of the most popular characters in gaming, and have been in the best platforming games ever. Now, we have had several attempts at being platforming kings over Sonic and Mario. Sony's Crash Bandicoot series is the first character that comes to mind here, being Sony's attempt with a mascot, and while the games were good, they just didn't match up to Mario and Sonic. What I ask here is, can Jak and Daxter be the platformer that will be Sony's answer to Mario and Sonic?

Back on the subject of Half Life, I have yet to see a FPS that has bettered Half Life in my opinion. I haven't played AVP2 yet, but I do intend to soon, I have heard good things about it, and if it does turn out to be better than Half Life, then I will be very happy.

The problem is that this will always happen in gaming. You get one definative game, and everyone will always try to better it. Then, someone will better it, and then it will all start over again. But this is an advantage, because it means we keep getting better games. We are the ones that are better off from all of this.
