I've just been informed by my Dad that i can get a lap top. However I have no idea what one he is getting me! I upgraded my PC the second I got it with more memory and a faster processor but I'm not sure what's the best thing to do with a laptop. I'm sure it's going to be a Toshiba one and I know it will come with Windows XP but apart from that I have no idea about the specs.

don't get a laptop. And if you must then don't get a dell one. Desktops own everything :)

Hmm interesting, the lap top I'm getting will have one of those tiny little joysticks on the keyboard for controlling the mouse or a touch pad both of which I prefer to a normal mouse some some obscure reason. As for the O.S. It will come with Windows XP as I've already said so I wont need any softwar upgrades for a while. I really just want it to type up essays, chat on msn, check my e-mails etc from my bedroom instead of fighting to the death with my family to get on.

My dad offered me an upgrade on my laptop. He needed one but only for word processing and spreadsheet, simple stuff.

I refused (so he's off buying a crappy one) because my next upgrade will be a Tablet. and I'm not willing to buy technology that's still in its infancy :-D

Is anyone going to get a Tablet instead of a laptop?

Forget about upgrades for the most part, they are very expensive and very tricky to fit. If it comes with Windows XP, it should be okay. Laptops are built for convenience, not outright power.

The only thing I might suggest is get a USB optical mouse for it. Laptop plus bed/sofa = winnar!

If you're using for general stuff (games, work, internet) Sony.

If practically all work, try one of them Compaq Tablets.

If all you want is portability and no weight Acer.

If you want high performance but don't mind about bulkiness Dell.
