Nevermind being nice and wanting to hug everyone, discussion can only be evolved through differing viewpoints and the exchange of ideas between two people.

If we all smiled and said
"Why, I believe the Gaycube is the best console ever!"
"Why I agree, although the PS2 also has it's dominant share of gamers, just a different marketing demographic"
"Of course, why I didn't see that is beyond me! Have a present"
"I love you!"

Things would get pretty boring pretty fast.
A decent argument can provide endless points of info, as well as maybe making you see something in a different light.
By argument, I dont mean name-calling and insults, you dirty sanchez, I mean a differing of opinion.

Wookiee and myself have clashed on numerous occassions in the Life forum, with it getting downright heated at times, yet it never fell into "You suck!" "No,you suck!" types of posts.
We both an idea and wanted to other to see how we felt.
Of course, I was right, but that's not the point.

Just to nod and smile and pat each other on the back turns us into a forum of vacant cow-people,all just waiting for a post to say "Yes, that is correct. Have some cake because you're so darned nice".

No. We must argue. And that means differing viewpoints without falling into "Yo mamma..." type posts.
They have their place and they can be funny.
So if you're a newbie getting hassled, give it back to that person.
Don't run away and cry, you big girl.
Stand up and argue back.

There is an old Jewish proverb that says:
"Don't argue louder, argue better".
Which is the perfect way to conduct yourself, if you disagree with someone? Say so, but make sure you arm yourself with facts first, that way nobody can come back at you.
Would you rather nice argumentative posts without abuse, or empty love-ins between slack-jawed hippies all wanting to touch each other and drink herbal tea?

And now we have an "Arguments Thread" in which to pull each others hair and squeal like girls at a Westlife concert.

(I was going to say Ned Beatty in the Appalachians, but I don't think many would get that on)

True, very true. Although I only usually do it on the Life Forum.

"EVOLUTION IS A LOAD OF RUBBISH!!"

Hope that gets loki's attention. {:)

Couldn't agree more.
I have posted massive rambling diatribes against things ranging from the bombing of Aghanistan (a violation of basic human rights if ever there was one) to why I feel that Popstars are killing music.

It's just something I have to do, no choice in the matter.
But at no point should you run someone else down seriously for what they say.
Sure they disagree with you, and by all means tell them but don't say "You're wrong", because that's just your version of things.

Like when I spoke out against the "War on Terror", I stated my opinions over massive posts, and was constantly told "You're wrong to think that" "You shouldn't think like that" yet nobody (well, 3 people did) bother to say "I disagree, and here is why"
There was no middle ground, it's either "You agree with me or you are wrong".

Which is nonce-sense of the highest calibre.
I know I go on about smash nintardo, but it's a joke. I dont go to the Ninty forums because I can't be arsed to start rows for the sake of it.
Arguing is productive,it encourages debates and the swapping of idealisms.
But you need to remain open to the other person,or at least acknowledge that you hear what they are saying.

And this "don't pick on newbies" thing, it should be "Newbies, stand up for yourself".
I got abuse from people when I started.
Did I cry? No. Did I leave? No.
It's a tough world kids, and if you think someone typing mean is beyond your tolerance, wait until you start work or get a mortgage etc.

"Don't argue louder, argue better"
Learn that and live by it.

For a row just go to the old posts and click on the 'XBox and Gamecube have been cancelled.......' post. Some kiddiewinks there were getting a little bit hot under the collar.

No!

(Wow. I can't remember the last time you used an exclamation mark.)

Well.

No, we should not be biased. That spoils the whole point, and is very, very selfish.

Argue from the heart, so much better.
