Thinking about this a bit more, there's probably very few games I'd like to see turned into movies, purely from a financial point of view.

When Square Soft made the movie "The Spirits Within", a spin-off from the Final Fantasy series of games, it cost $100 million to make and yet only took $15 million in it's first weekend at the US box office, pretty devastating for a software publisher.

The only REALLY lucrative franchise would be the Tomb Raider series which has been milked to death, if Core Design were to bring out another installment of the game it would have to be a real killer to make me want to go out and buy it, but I'm sure that if another movie was released with Lara Croft in it they'd get a healthy kick in their bank balance.

FM's Law states that "if a film is a hit then the game won't be. If the game is a hit then the film won't be."

We don't buy games to watch them in the same way that we don't visit the cinema to play movies. We can't get as involved with an onscreen character as we can a gaming character, so take Metal Gear Solid as an example.

Great storylines, great action sequences, great plot twists, great characters, everything you need to make a great movie. But watching Solid Snake on screen crouching behind a crate for 4 minutes as he works out the pattern of a guard's patrol isn't quite as exciting as actually doing it for yourself.

Out of all the games in my collection I'd have to pick just two for possible movie candidates:

Silent Hill 2, but basically this would turn into 'just another horror movie'

and

HeadHunter, but basically this would turn into 'just another action movie'

The transition from game to film needs something else to make it work, it's just that most producers haven't yet worked out what that elusive something is, so they tend to replace it with action or an all-star cast when that isn't what is specifically required.

I have an Aunty Matty. Not quite Anti-matter, but close.

She's some sort of Welsh history guru, on tv a lot. Goes on, says some stuff about miners, and gets paid.

I've got some stuff to upload to my website, but I can't be bothered to do it. I think I'll write a story instead.

And the answer to the original topic is "Alex Kidd."
