When you play Grand Theft Auto III, you'll want to have at least one friend in the room with you. Not only will that friend be able to share in the awe you feel upon experiencing such an incredible game, but he/she will be on hand to call an ambulance should you suddenly slip into a drooling coma of gaming ecstasy

First off, it should be noted that Grand Theft Auto III is not a game for kids. It more than earns its "M" rating with adult language, adult situations and lots of violence. Players can engage in all sorts of criminal activity, from assault to car theft to soliciting prostitutes to murder. In short, young gamers and those who are uneasy about such things should steer clear of this title. However, if you love action and gangster movies and are of an appropriate age, which should be everyone, then you shouldn't deny yourself the pleasure of playing this game.

In GTA III, you'll play as a low-rent thug trying to make a name for himself in a seedy metropolis called Liberty City. At the beginning of the game it seems that your budding career in crime will be prematurely cut short when your so-called girlfriend double crosses you and sticks you with the rap for a robbery. However, you manage to catch a lucky break when the police transport you're going to jail in is ransacked by a group of criminals looking to bust out a buddy. You take advantage of the situation and make yourself a free man once again. Back on the streets, you do what any self-respecting criminal would: get back to work and get some revenge on the people who set you up.

As in all of the Grand Theft Auto games, the core of GTA III is its open-ended game play. While there are hundreds of missions to complete and an engaging story, there is an incredible amount of fun to be had by just roaming around the city and doing as you please. Keeping in the tradition of the series, DMA and Rock star have made a world where you have an unbelievable amount of freedom to do whatever you wish. Among many other things, you can steal cars, terrorize civilians, shoot it out with the police, get mixed up in car chases, collect hidden packages, go on killing rampages or try to get Insane Stunt Bonuses by taking ridiculous jumps in cars. In addition to the story-based assignments you get from the local crime bosses, you can also perform missions that are specific to different types of vehicles. Steal a taxi and pick up fare, grab an ambulance and bring wounded people to the hospital, hop in a fire truck and put out fires, or nab a police car and go on vigilante missions. In GTA III, you'll never be at a loss for things to do.

While you start on foot and get into most fights on a face-to-face basis, much of the game play takes place in vehicles. Liberty City is positively huge, so driving becomes a necessity on most of your jobs. You can steal any of the 81 vehicles in the game at the press of a button, and just speeding around is incredibly entertaining.

Second only to the game play in GTA III is its sound. From gunshots to explosions to the squeal of tires to the purr of a police helicopter overhead, the sound effects in the game are perfect. The voice acting is just as impressive and those who play them actually make their over-the-top characters sound believable.
Of all the great auditory features in the game, the most interesting and original has got to be the car stereo. Almost every vehicle in the game has a radio in it, which can be tuned to one of nine local stations that play anything from Pop to Reggae to Drum-and-Bass to talk radio to honest-to-goodness classical music. The radio stations have a real feel of authenticity to them with professional sounding DJ's and even some genuinely funny commercials.

The Grand Theft Auto series has never been known for having impressive graphics; the focus has always been on function over form. That being said, the visuals in GTA III are a welcome surprise. This game looks very good, with stylish characters, versatile vehicle design and heavily complex environments. Day fades seamlessly into night. Rain, thunderstorms, and fog gently come and go. Real time lighting effects are well implemented. The amount of visual detail is dumbfounding. You can view the game from four perspectives on foot and five in a vehicle. When you walk past a cop you'll wave at him. When a car gets too close to you you'll flip the driver off. If you take off in a jacked vehicle without taking time to close the car door, it'll swing around until you slow down and slam it shut. Each vehicle has 17 breaking points on it that take damage as you bang it up. The list goes on and on.

The graphics are not perfect, however. There is a large amount of pop-up on approaching objects, especially when you're driving in a fast-moving vehicle, and you'll even see some clipping problems every now and then. But all in all these blemishes do little to take away from the game play and are easy to accept in light of the gigantic, fluid world and otherwise superb visuals.

Grand Theft Auto III is one of the most enjoyable gaming experiences I've ever had, and I recommend that you play it as soon and as much as you possibly can. The incredible versatility of the game play, coupled with stellar sound and visuals, make this game nothing less than sheer bliss on a DVD and I would say this is a ‘GAME TO PLAY’

It's a great, well written review. If SR see you as 2 new to win then I expect you'll consider yourself unlucky. I would, but then again, I can't write like that.

Over the years I've become very jaded after many bad experiences with customer services, you have bucked the trend. Polite and efficient from the Freeola team, well done to all involved.
