A friend of mine wants to get a GC, but his TV is yonks old, and he wants to know if the GC works with the old lead you use with PSone, that also works with PS2? It's not a SCART cable, but people with PlayStation 1s will know what I mean.

Well the Nintendo ones don't fit into the PSX as the Nintendo ones have an additional little square at the top of the lead to prevent it fitting into other plugs. The Sony leads have no such little square, so they do fit into a GC/N64... whether it works or not I don't know, I could try with my Brothers PSX cables later if he's got them back off whoever he lent them to...

On consoles by the same manufacturer, yes. Hence my PSone RGB SCART lead is now in use on my PS2.

But between manufacturers? Little or no chance. In fact I'd be willing to put money on them going out of their way to make them incompatible, just like with the controllers and memory cards.

Well I had my Cube for a long time before I used the SCART cable on it as my Tv didn't have a SCART input and I simply used the old RF lead for my N64, which worked fine. Okay, both are manufactured by Nintendo so they're bound to be similar, but still, it does demonstrate there is at least some kind of standard on consoles cables.

Whether it's SCART or not is irrelevant. (A fully-wired SCART lead is 21 pins anyway, not 6 or 12.) I'm talking about the end which plugs into the console. The connector itself is fundamentally different, and is likely to have different signals on different wires.

Should any of these carry a voltage to the wrong place at the other end, it could be costly. The voltages concerned are only small, but you could still see your equipment disappearing in a puff of white smoke.

Much safer to buy the proper lead. You won't wear the sockets loose by constant cable-switching, and besides... it's not like they cost a fortune, is it?

How would it damage your Cube...? The cable is an output for the visual data the GameCube is sending to the TV... the Cube is recieving nothing from the TV, so how would it damage the Cube...?

Well I did try it..

*slaps Chemical Ali before he says anything*

.. and it didn't work.

I better not have broken me GC though. If I have I might have to go and sit outside on a green field and throw bright yellow stars at clouds.

It would be like a REAL-LIFE GC GAME!!

=P

No, it won't work, and you'd be stupid to even try it.

For a start, the PS2 connector has twice as many pins (12 as opposed to 6), and even if it did fit the chances are that they are wired differently.

At best you would simply get no picture.

At worst, you could damage both your TV and your Gamecube.

Argh technical jargon... well not really but I hate this sort of stuff, gets me annoyed easily especially when I'm trying to set something up but can't.
