First there was the big, bulky, black and white, brick-like Gameboy. Next was the mini version of this handheld console, the poket Gameboy. Then it was sprinkled with magic dust and brought into the new exciting world of colour. something that the sega game gear had managed to do back in the days of the original Gameboy. Then, we were told that the machine would be turned into a 32bit console, which incase you dont know, is as powerful as a playstation.
Apon hearing this news, I imagined how great those long boring car journeys would with a machine that had the fantastic gameboy gameplay, and colourful PSONE style 3D graphics.

But now the Gameboy advanced is here, im not sure that its as advanced as I first thaught. Wheres the amazing 3D graphics? There not there, instead we have slightly improved gameboy colour screens, that look more like the Snes thant the playstation. I also expected the games to play a bit better, but most are still just bog standard platformers.

Dont get me wrong, I think the GBA has some great games, but not many. Theres mario kart, tony hawk, and doom, each are great looking and playable games, but they are not all that different to previous versions of them. sure some have exclusive to gameboy tracks or levels, but most of the exclusives looks rushed, and do not reflect the quality of the game that has been passed down from its ancestors.
do you remember before the gba was released, the magazines had pictures of it, but on the screens were images of N64 games that they had pasted on, to give us a taste of what was to come, but my mouth is still watering and waiting to be filled with a taste like that.

What I want to know, is why the game gear failed. I suspect it was because of the poor quality and quantity of the games, as that was the only let down it had, in its short life.It had so much more than the under acheiving gameboy, it had a full colour screen, when the gameboy was still just in black and white. it also had built in screen light, so you could see in the dark, without the need for buying extra light, it had a bigger screen, so there was no need for the clip on magnifyer aswell. But the gameboy had some great games like tetris and mario, in the slot, which poor old sega couldnt compete with, so the gameboy progresed, while the gamegear was left for dead. Thus ending, the handheld console war.

Now lets talk about the add ons, and accesories. Theres the usual battery pack, mains adaptor etc, but theres also a few new things on the way:

The TV boy: Wasnt that a name for an old console? basiacly the TV boy is an accesory you fix into your GBA, that allows you to turn your handheld console into a pocket tv. Wow, great new technology, WRONG! its been done before, about 10 years before actualy, and guess who did, thats right, the good old sega game gear. the game gear tv adaptor let you pick up all terestial tv in full colour, and sometimes i could even pick up things that other people were watching on cable tv.

Card swiper thing: This sounds intresting, you fix this machine into your gba, then swipe special new pokemon cards through it and it downloads the data to your console. this data includes info, pictues, music and games. shame I dont like pokemon, or this would be a must have. but havent we seen this before, anyone remember the barcode battaler? that was a simular device, swipe barcodes, any barcodes from anywhere, then it would create a character for you to fight with.

Theres also the fantastic idea of linking the GBA, with the Gamecube. use your gba to control the game, or to add to the game. for example, on the kirby tilt and tumble game, you control kirby on your gamecube using your GBA, then from time to time, the little pink puffy person, with fall down onto your GBA allowing you to continue the gameplay on the small screen. This is going to give the gamecube a lot of edge in the on going conole war between PS2, Xbox and the gamecube. If they had done this for the N64 and gameboy colour, maybe the 64bit console would have been a bit more popular.

Theres no question about it, the gameboy has come a long way, and despite not being such a big leap as I first expected, the GBA is the best handheld around, and will continue to be for a long time. Especialy with a great selection of games on the way including tekken and crash bandicoot. But whats next for nintenos smalled child the gameboy, maybe the gameboy 64, which has 64bit graphics and will feature a mini version of the classic mario 64, who knows?

Please now share any of your views and opinions on the gameboy, why the gamegear failed, or anything related to the subject.

The GBA ain't all that.

Well in some ways it is, being a 32 bit handheld console is a good thing in itself really. simply because you don't seem many things like this lying around (Well the GBA you do but not any other types) yeah anyway in this way it is a great, amazing etc thing. But games wise not that good at all.

Well maybe i am being a bit hasty in rating it bad, because i'm sure in no time at all it will have some great games, but at this present time it has nothing that makes me go "wow this is amazing" or just make me simply drool. Another real big fault about the games is that they are nothing revolutionary, nothing original and plain boring. Also the prices of the games are just insabity in itself, a little cartridge with rubbish infornmation and coding on costing you what thirty odd quid is just pathetic and overpriced.

Well now for examples;

To start off how about mario, been ther done that, way to easy is what i think

F-Zero, i think i'll stick to my 64 version thanks

Thats all i can be bothered to do and i'm sure none of you will want to read just a load of negative rubbish really. Nah thought not.

However the games are not it's only faults, as Ant said the light reflecting off the screen making it barely visible is a bit of a problem, i tend to enjoy the game more if i can actually see it, you know what i'm saying?? I would of also thought seeing as though it is so "advanced" the screen would have some sort of back lighting system, But to my dismay it does not, so there goes another twenty odd quid on a light.

Me myself prefers console that aren't so small and attach to the tv myself, more entertainment, and because the picture is bigger and can see what i'm doing and actually enjoy the game.

Well now you all see why i do not like this so called innovation to gaming in its self. I know many people will share a different opinion and this i would like to see.

well thanks for reading

GBA has overall disappointed me...

My first real Nintendo product, and I'm already unhappy. I hate the Mario game I bought, and the only other one I have is F-Zero, which is okay but annoying at times.

The screen is absolutely awful. It reflects all the light and I can not see a damn thing. Advance my a*se.

I was delighted to see that the Game Boy Advance wasn't Playstation or N64-like. There are very few games in real 3D, others that look like they're 3D but are what's called "mode-7" and others which are just plane old simple 2D.

Now why would I be delighted about a handheld not being primarily designed to run 3D games?

Well, one reason is because most games I've played for the longest periods of time were in 2D. Especially SNES games like Super Mario Allstars, The LEgend Of Zelda: A Link To The Past, Super Mario World and Super Mario Kart . Other games include classic PC games like Zelliard, Day of the Tentacle, Full Throttle, Virtual Springfield, Mario VGA, even the Command & Conquer originals!

I reckon the classic gaming era, basically the 8 and 16 bit era of games offered greater potential for bringing us the best entertainment in our homes.

If we were stuck with a Playstation handheld with Nintendo's logo on the front, we'd be stuck with a load of ports (I know Rayman is ment to be a direct port), and a load of 3D games which are impossibly hard to see on the small screen.

I'm not saying that any of these games were bad. What I am saying is that most gamers have access to a Playstation and many games for it, many gamers have played the games on the Playstation (or their PC versions) an so re-releasing them isn't such a good idea when compared to re-releasing, updating and creating new SNES-like games.

It's not just Nintendo who have realised this. Sega are bringing us Sonic the Hedgehog's new 2D adventure on the Game Boy Advance and from the screenshots I've seen in magazines it looks great, I hope it plays as well as it looks though.

So those are the main reasons why I'm glad that the GBA uses the technology it has.

Nice post there CDouch about the evoltion of the Gameboy to present day. I too thought that the GBA was actually going to be an all-singing, all dancing PS1 on wheels - I was greatly disappointed. All it is is a Gameboy, with slightly enhanced Gameboy frames, with more colours and 3D capabilities. I've never bought a GBA and I'm damn pleased too! They're only really good for a plane flight. However, handhelds may change for the better in the future and I hope so too!

Couldn't be bothered reading it all but all I'm gonna say is patience. Stick with, it's an EXCELLENT little console so long as you buy the right games. Tony Hawk Pro Skater 2 i recommend, and if you haven't already completed it, Mario Advance aswel. Not sure about others like Rayman though. Just stick with what you know's best.
