It's the mid-90's, and the gaming scene is changing beyond recognition. As the SNES and Mega Drive are being phased out, plans for new consoles emerge. All have one huge similarity- they are all based around 3D gaming.

Anyone remember seeing the first 3D home console games? Ok, so Starfox on the SNES was nice, but with games like Tekken and Mario you knew that gaming had changed direction. For the first time, gaming could mimic reality.

Since then, of course, things have progressed on a course to realism. Better graphics, more polygons, smoother framerates, better sound, bigger plots...

But what is it that the Next-gen consoles have to offer? Well, just better graphics, more poly....

Get the idea?
So what can be done to take gaming to the next step- what is the "next 3D"?

Ideas?

I think MMO (Massively Multiplayer Online) console games are the way it will go. The graphics, speed and size of games are now pretty impressive, so the next gen consoles should come out with modems built in, internet ready, to enable such things as playing Gran Turismo 4 online, Resident Evil online, Baldur's Gate online and so on.

The thing that is holding us back here in the UK is the rollout of broadband, which is really essential to putting everyone on a level playing field with the rest of the world.

Then there's the movie industry. Games already draw a lot of inspiration from film and vice versa. There is now a lot of money in the games industry, which should start to attract bigger stars to games. Instead of unknown actors doing the lead voiceovers for the big movie stars (The Mummy Returns for example), we're going to have more people like Joe Pantoliano doing voiceovers and cameos (GTA3 for example), and even bigger stars playing the lead roles in games.

You never know, in the far future they might even manage to bring out a decent wrestling game...

Well I think graphics have moved on to such an extent that soon enough they will hit a 'roof'.

When it happens games will have to sell on something other than better graphics.

But it's so easy to sell a game on it's graphics alone, a picture tells a thousand words, and we know how little some like to read those words.

I think the next step up (you could call it the next dimension...) is online multiplayer.

Other than that it could be hologram gaming...

Length, Width, Depth and Time? Doesn't exactly sound right, but what the hey!? The next dimention will be amazing and a lot of reviews I've seen on TV have billed Dead or Alive 3 as being "the nearest to 4D that you can get." That would help if we knew that 4D was!

Gameworlds that are (near) totally interactive perhaps.

I would like to say Artifical Intelligence that really evolves during gameplay, but I think this is in reality a long, long way off.
