Recent news reports have suggested the police in various areas are up in arms about the Government's attempts to reduce the amount of Speed Cameras in the UK.

The cynical among us may suggest this is due to the revenue stream the police enjoy from speeding fines but the question remains; do speed cameras really work?

There are 2 things I'd like to point out:
-If many people are caught by cameras then the cameras aren't obviously having an effect.
-I've seen plenty of occassions where drivers have been speeding and then slowed down for the camera, only to begin speeding again.

In addition, do drivers spend more time looking at their speed on the dashboard if approaching a speed camera and does this have a detrimental effect on their concentration of the road in front of them?

Personally I think that if speed cameras are to be used then they should be hand-held ones that can be used anywhere at any time. That way drivers would need to watch their speed on any road. In addition, the percentage either side of the speed to allow for variance in the instruments of the car should be increased slightly to allow for this.

Personally I'm all for going the correct speed, I've seen too many accidents to know it's not just a silly precaution and I've seen far too many drivers come right up the back of me when I've been going the right speed on a 30mph stretch of road.

Totally disagree Chris. The speed cameras are there for prevention, not prosecution.

They are (ideal world) placed in places where they want to force people to slow down, not catch people speeding. Like schools etc.

Imagine this, car speeding and gets caught, but injures a school child.... but oh well we caught him speeding and gave him a ticket. (Plus prison etc if needed). Child is still injured/more than injured...

It's the old argument, is prevention better than curing? (If indeed the person learns from their being caught)

Speed cameras seem to be a waste of time. One thing I'd say that would make them work, but is currently against the law, is to take down the signs for 'speed camera areas' and conceal the cameras, because as it is, the cameras are big yellow boxes sticking out into the road, allowing people to slow down. Other simple things like enabling the camera to monitor both the approach and departure of the car would work as well. It's measuring up cost and safety though.

The short answer to the question is they do work but they don't have the intended effect. As you've said, people know or can see where the cameras are, slow down and then floor it again. If you go at 70mph on a dual carriageway or motorway these days you are overtaken by about 95% of the cars.

I've no problem with the speed cameras myself, if you're breaking the speed limit and get caught then I can't see what you have to complain about.

I'd suggest some roads need more of them. We took our daughter to a forest theme park near Aviemore over the summer and the drive back was an eye opener. I've never seen so many people recklessly overtaking on a stretch of road, it's miraculous there wasn't a crash.
