Nowadays anything new that is released on the console market is purely for competition reasons. Of course there are new inventions coming out all the time, but most never seem to see the light over in the United Kingdom. The gaming industry is something for big brains, which gets big pay cheques at the end. You need to be on top of everything and know exactly what you’re doing otherwise the company will sink quicker then the Titanic.
The competition is massive, with companies springing up all around the world trying to set an impression on us.
We’ve seen Apple, being crushed under the weight of Microsoft, Sony destroying Sega and Nintendo all at the same time, Coca Cola wiping the floor with Pepsi and Gameplay and Special Reserve competing always competing for the number one hot spot.
We’ve seen it all and it seems that everything is judged on appearance rather then performance and price is another important factor when purchasing something. We have become a nation of people who are impatient and very critical, we are the main stakeholders of each business and the computer gaming industry is definitely one of them. We have the biggest impact on it, whether it is from our opinions that affect the way the next game is produce to our needs. Information picked up from market research that leads from one thing to another. Then there are the sales; they will determine whether the game has sold correctly and all gone according to plan. This is a key figure to go on, as you know just how well you’ve done.
It seems that we have forgotten what is important anymore and judge things on appearance. As we all know, a wise man once said a wise man once said ‘Never judge a book by its cover’ that's the way I heard the proverb and this is true but unfortunately we tend to ignore it.
Let’s just change the topic for a minute here from gaming into everyday life. When buying clothing most teenagers will go for something that is popular. How you determine whether it is popular or not is all up to either your own opinions or down to what everyone else is buying. Most people are very conscious of what others think of them, this is mainly in the appearance department.
It seems that everything we abide by is judged purely on the way it looks. So you can already guess what I’m going to say next, you are probably thinking that this will lead me onto talking about graphics and how we judge games purely on that.
Well if those were your thought then you aren’t far from the truth, so let me explain.
You find one of the most talked about things around the forums being the competition between console companies. Whether it is the power of the console, the ability that it has to offer, the games, the controllers or the size people will find a way to complain. But what I want to talk and concentrate on is how graphics affect the way you look at the game.
Back when Grand Theft Auto was released, the government parents and anyone who thought they had authority began to moan about the content in the game. It was supposedly unacceptable to have children playing on this game and giving them the impression that it was fine to go around and shoot people whilst trying to steal their car in real life and even with the 18 certificate printed in the bottom right hand corner of the case it still wasn’t enough to put worrying parents off.
It is my personal opinion and probably from many others out there that the only reason we are able to play on GTA today is because of the realism in the game. Even all those many years ago the games designers were capable of much more visually then GTA was. Maybe they were lazy or perchance they knew the game would never have found its way onto the high street if it were any more realistic.
The reason we got the impression from GTA for its violence was not only in the title but the whole point of the game, killing people and nicking their cars. It doesn’t take a genius to work that out. So I ask you, why do people find things like Pokemon to be childish?
It’s the same sort of thing isn’t it? Violence but to a different extreme. You replace the human beings with ‘childish’ characters that seem harmless and put them into a ring to fight till the death. I’ve never heard once in my life anyone complain about that but what if you turn that around.
You replace the ‘childish’ characters that seem harmless and put human beings in their place. They are then put into a ring where they will fight towards their death.
What impact would that have had on the public as the only difference is that now instead of fluffy, cuddly and loveable creatures being used, human beings are used. You automatically can image everything, the gore that the game would contain, the realism it would enclose and the moaning that would come as a result of it.
But the case seems that even when the game doesn’t contain something that of realistic quantity. Resident Evil didn’t cause a stir as such but it was a game that was made to terrify and did a perfect job of doing so. Was the reason for that not finding fame due to its violence a result of zombies being used instead of people? Or perhaps it was because the game didn’t contain something that happens in everyday life?
If this was the case, then why was Metal Gear Solid just the same? MGS was a game, in which human beings were murdered in cold blood by either getting shot or killed with the help of your characters own hands. So what made GTA worse then this game? It’s all a state of realism and just how far people are willing to go to make the game something that sells or something that gets unwanted attention.
Does anyone else have any opinions on this?
Anyway, getting back to realism, I'm not a believer that realistic graphics make a better game, infact sometimes if a game is bound by realism it can have a limited appeal to me.I like my games to be based in fantasy land, the chirpy tunes often bring instant joy. Not to say that playing in the land terror, fighting evil bound by real world physics can't be fun, but more often it's not such an immediate form of escapism, in my opinion.

I guess we all
My apoligises, but why did you have to mention that three times? I don't mean that in a mean way.
Anyways, I agree with what you said. I don't think I've ever played GTA without having a chuckle here and there, you just don't play the game to abide by the rules. As for what you said about pixles, the same apples to films but they seem to have more of an effect.
Is this because of humans being the characters or is it because it is more realistic? We see things on tele like 'The Secret Life Of Ghosts and Werewolves' and just watching it creates an eerie atmosphere in the room. Is it because of the realism involved in the programme?
When playing a game, we know that's exactly what we are doing. Now whether I'm running over people or jumping on turtles backs it's all the same thing - taking out an adversary in a game.
A bunch of polygons (and previously, sprites!) can be made to look like a number of things, but I've yet to hear about anyone, ever, who has mistaken this for anything real.
So why are games like GTA so much worse than Resident Evil?
If anything, in terms of how it could affect you, I'd say RE was a much worse game. You play GTA, have a bit of fun running people over, and you know it's a laugh. When playing Resident Evil it's a different kind of thrill, you're on edge, and anything can jump out at any second to scare you.
So RE could make you a bit jumpy for a bit, in the same way as some people get after they see a horror movie. Worst possible thing it could do is make you jumpy! Ban this sick filth!
When you say that we grow up, and see these things come and go, I guess that's why so many of us accept them so readily, games have been around as long as I remember, but those that are reporting the horrors of gaming often didn't grow up with it, weren't won over by early swarms of games, and only now take notice, and decide that "It's awful!" These people just don't get gaming, or gamers, but more often than not they're people in a position of power, be it the media or Government, so we get to hear what they say. Others are then won over by their words, having only been told the evils of gaming, and decide it's all bad!

I guess we all like different things though, and believe different things.
I've always said that game content are not to be taken seriously and anyone that views them as something you should do in real life, deserves to be locked away from society.
