I currently have Windows Me on my PC and I'm considering buying XP.

PC is a MAXX P4 1.7GHz, 256Mb RAM, GeForce3 graphics card, SoundBlaster Live! soundcard, and Pyro videocapture card.

Can anyone tell me if it's worth going for the Home or Pro version? (I know Pro is significantly more expensive, but for the sake of this post, assume that price is not an issue.)

a) What does Pro offer that Home doesn't?
b) How well (if at all) does games software function under either version of XP?

I do not want to bother with a dual-boot setup, and I don't want to lose the ability to play my existing games.

Thanks in advance for any input.

Yup - that's the standard in the MAXX I bought. There was no point having more originally, because - apparently - the home versions of Windows (95, 98, Me) are incapable of using more. Or so I've been told.

Though I got the XP Home Upgrade edition yesterday and installed it last night, so more RAM may well be in order - funds permitting.

And my verdict of XP? Bloody fantastic!

I'm not the greatest fan of Microsoft, as you'll already know. But XP is the first edition of Windows that I have been truly, truly impressed with.

It's detected my GeForce3, soundcard, and Ethernet card nad got them all working without me having to install ANY further drivers.

And when it came to setting up Internet access, it pinged a few addresses, picked up my cable modem, and that was it... instant access.

I know there have been issues with running it on older machines (see Watchdog last week?), but I've had no problems whatsoever. It really does 'just work'. It's so good that it's almost like being back on the old Amiga! :-)

The only 'problem' is that you don't seem to be able to run the setup program directly from DOS mode on a clean partition, like you could with the old upgrades, and just insert the previous windows disc to prove you had it.

I had to install WinME first, then choose the 'clean installation' option which obliterates the previous Windows installation. But after that it was plain sailing.

I was absolutely gobsmacked, and I still can't believe that I've been so impressed by an MS product. Gawd help me, whatever next?!

You could sign up for the free Windows XP trial CD from the following address

http://www.microsoft.com/uk/itxp/evalpack.htm

It should at least give you an idea of how the home version of Windows XP works and if its right for you.

Wookiee, you've only got 256MB RAM?

Not being funny, but is that enough?

I'm tempted to get a Gig, but I need to check some prices first.
