Hear’Say are one of the most manufactured bands there is these days. They were shot to fame simply because they all were all chosen from a talent contest that happened to be aired on TV. Steps are another manufactured band. Both of these two bands music is made to appeal directly to 14 year old hormonally charged girls. And it works. Steps have had a stupid amount of number 1’s and Hear’Say have a 100% record in that field, 2 songs released, 2 number ones.

But what if this kind of thing was transferred to the games industry? What kind of games would we see being produced?

We’d see games that were intentionally aimed to go straight to number 1 in the charts and only to appeal to casual gamers. What kind of games would these be? Well, Considering that the largest player base for games consoles are males aged from 14 – 21 year olds, it would have to be them.

Obviously research would be done to see exactly what kind of game they like – But I’m pretty sure I can guess what they’d want – Shoot em-ups and beat em-ups. Why? Because these two genres are the two that that age group play most. Consequences? A market flood of Pop Games. Only games that are manufactured to go straight to number 1 in the gams charts would be produced. Well, not only, but a huge majority of them would be made, leaving room for only a few titles of a different genre.

So what if this kind of thing started being implemented, what if developers started along this road?

It would mean a domination of casual gamers practically ruling the games market with their Pop Games, while the gamers who AREN’T Pop Games fans would be left out in the wild with only a few games arriving now and again to satisfy their lust.

The nasty part of all this is, it’s beginning to happen. We are beginning to see more games of the Shoot ‘em-up and Beat em-up variety. Most of which are quick re-hashes of previous games stuck together to keep people happy while the companies work on a new one.

Really, Pop Games began to appear a hell of a lot on the PS1. Count up the number of Shoot ‘em-up games compared to any other genre.

I’m not having a dig at Sony or anything because they were only trying to sell their console, but it is very apparent that the PS1 had a lot of games geared solely towards casual gamers.

If we do carry on in this way though, Pop Games will soon dominate the gaming world leaving gamers who want alternative genre’s caught with their trousers down and wearing a dumb expression.

We’ll be frozen out more or less.

It’s not all doom and gloom though, both Shigeru Miyamoto and Hideo Kojima are seeing to that. But I’m sure things are going to get worse before they get better. Pop Games will soon be common place in the market. Let’s hope Shiggy and Koji can do something about it before it get’s too bad.

Perhaps you're just looking in the wrong place?

Yeah I know, but the thing people look at first is the charts, and it's all pop crap that's in the charts, and it annoys me that other great music is being ignored.

I always thought a 'Celebrity Deathmatch' rip off could work quite well on the console... especially if on the PC version at least) user created characcters could be used within the game... that way the company could get around copyright issues, since Britney Spears would have bee designed by some kid and not the company that wrote the software...

Also... There are some days when beating the crap out of your boss would be highly theraputic! :)

I'd have said The Simpsons Wrestling was a pop game... popular TV program, very popular upcoming 'sport' - mix the two and boo yeah!

The thing is, it's a very crap game... I don't know how anyone can honestly say the game is fun... the arenas are all the same, the moves are more limited than the talent at DMA design and the graphics just plain suck!

I'm afraid, that with this unwanted, but inevitable mini-merger between the Gaming and Film industries, we're bound to see loads more 'licensed games' from unimaginative developers.

From their point of view, making a name for yourself in the industry is no easy feat, and developing can send you straight into the Red, so to get any sort of financial backing they need to make loads of money from a not so hard to make game; and if the storyline is already there - you've little more to do than write the code!

I'd have said putting up with all these 'Pop Games', isn't such a bad thing... after all, if MB games didn't back the first few not-too-great Rareware games look where we'd be now... Rare are our only 'move' against the Sonyphiles as it is, it'd be hell fighting without them!! :D

I can understand the frustration from top-developers like Miyamoto and Kojima, but without these games, the gaming industry MIGHT not have enough to keep it afloat.

I'm afraid, that from my point of view, these games honestly are a necessary nuisance!

Great Popst, Chrs! :D

Just because the charts are full of POP stuff, doesn't mean that's all that's being released.

Perhaps you're just looking in the wrong place?
