Regardless of our completely bias opinions on whether or not gaming is cool, have you ever wondered what 'people' think?
Sure, ever since Wipeout and GT were released people had an excuse to buy and play games... people would tell their friends that '...the music tracks are happenin' or that 'they're thinkning of going into car mechanics and playing this game is the way forward...' - Heh... nice try, Son - but no sale!
If you were to tell your mates that your really into gaming and that you can't wait to get the next installment of the Mario series do you know what they'd say? I know what my friends would say - 'Ha! Mario...? Are you alright, Jez?'
The thing is... gaming is cool to a certain extent... just like Lawn Darts is, and 'Man of Scotland's Embroidery Class' on Sky TV is - It's all down to what puts the icing on your cake...
But everyone knows we have preferances... so what do people think about gaming in general... I went into Birmingham City center to find out... but then I was mugged and someone stole my survey sheets... But as far as I can remember most people 'didn't have much to do with it and when they did they were forced to by a small Japanese guy with bushy hair carrying a purple dice-like object...'
Results: Inconclusive...
But seriously though... is gaming cooler than is used to be? I don't think so... it's just that more attention has been given to gaming through Microsoft joining the market, PokÈmon and all the Movie >to> Film conversions.
Sure the 'Playstation' is a household name, but a lot of teenagers in the UK especially don't regard gaming very highly...

Game as a whole has moved past the stage of being cool. It's now individual companies, games and franchises within gaming which can be classed as cool by the media and gamers. The general consensus agrees that gaming is here to stay, so the debate has moved to content rather than existence. As with movies and music, people don't talk as though gaming will die out as a passing fad, they rather talk about who or what will fall victim to intense consumer scrutiny next.
To draw comparison between the film and game industries is easy. The publishers are now credited with the vast majority of the success of their individual games. People aren't buying GTA3 and claiming it as a success for Sony, but are looking closer to see that DMA Designs and Rockstar games are the onse who put their effort into the production, the created the content. All Sony provided was a delivery medium in the Playstation 2. Obviously the games industry is much more fragmented than the film industry as there isn't a set standard as there is with DVD-Video. Sony, Nintendo and Microsoft are all grappling for market share, and the software which can be delivered to the end user is largely dependent upon the console they own. Many more companies are competing for a share of the DVD-Video hardware market, but at the end of the day, they all play a standard format, something which wouldn't suit the games industry due to it's need for competitive development of hardware and software capabilities.
The music industry cannot be so closely compared to the games industry, as it is structured and operated very differently, and again, there is a much wider audience and standard formats available. The music industry is however converging into the games industry in many ways. Games such as Gran Turismo 3 have soundtracks which are graced by the top acts of the day, and different sounds to reflect upon the area the game is being purchased in. Sound Producers and Programmers are taking a much more active role in gameplay, and new revolutions are taking place all the time. With companies such as Dolby and THX taking an active interest in the current crop of consoles, and users demanding the highest audio quality from the games/entertainment systems, then this convergence will onlt grow in stature.
So if you ask if gaming is "still" cool. The answer has to be an undisputed yes. The music and film industries are both converging with games, and the cinematic and aural quality of games is increasing on a daily basis thanks to an input from the film and music industries, people have never seen anything this good. With consoles capable of playing audio CDs, DVD-Video and being able to access and stream content from the interent, this convergence of the industries in the home will only see boundaries fall at it's feet. Let's just hope that the music and film industries don't get dragged down into the Nintendo vs Sony vs Micsrosoft hardware scuffle.

I have alwaus been a fan of computer gaming. I have come to realise that we should not judge a game on wherever or not it has cartoon characters or cartoony graphics, but it's what is in the game that counts for me.
People may have judged gaming differently because of games like Pokemon, but deep down, it's what the games play like that matters. The gaming industry is booming and on the increase, games are selling out in minutes worldwide.

Of course gaming is cool, otherwise I wouldn't be sitting here in my ford cortina with my bermuda shorts on drinking pina coladas..... ;-)
Seriously, There are 'cool' elements of gaming and elements that, let's be honest, you wouldn't want to go shouting about in public. But, hey, who wants gaming to be cool anyway? If it means sponsorship of dance labels and games characters being created simply to bring in the non-gamer, you have to wonder where the actual game design and elements of 'fun' come in the developers list.
Ok, so there are real bonuses to cool gaming, one obvious one being that you can walk into a gaming store anywhere and not get funny derogatory looks from people, another being that a lot of your mates that are not normally into gaming may now own a console. The downsides are that you don't really feel that it's as special and reserved as it used to be and that people can flock out and buy a console or game purely on the strength of an advert, meaning that only the companies that provide massive budgets for advertising really make the money and the small companies with the hidden talent and original ideas are buried under their weight.
