Yeah mate ssxpro and I had a chat about this last week.
I recently got a great cable from Blockbuster for £3.99
It is a RGB cable for the PS1 with seperate audio cables but it works well with the PS2 and costs a lot less
The only problem I have is that my new TV doesnt like RGB inputs and shoves the picture slightly of the screen when using the RGB cable. I contacted sharp and they said tough $h!t
For some reason Sony only output DVD via Component video as standard when in RGB mode. Composite works but does not give you the quality of RGB.
thus when the PSX is in RGB you get the Green Screen.
Re-wiring your RGB Scart with three phono's and connecting it to the component video input on the tv and setting Component on the PS2 works a treat.
The only problem is that you have to use the optical in for the audio.
Not all TV's have a Component video input so you can wither buy the Region X Software or put up with composite video output.
If so, I would suggest that the cable is only wired for composite through the SCART connector, and that all you are effectively doing is switching composite output between the phono jacks and the SCART connector.
If this is the case, connect only the SCART plug, switch it to composite and see if you still get a picture.
It's hard to describe, but you will have 'soft' or 'fuzzy' edges to graphics if the signal is composite, and 'hard' and 'sharp' edges if it's RGB. If I could see it myself, I could tell you instantly, but you'd never know if you'd only ever seen a composite picture.
As far as I know, software such as Region X simply patches the driver to force composite output through an RGB cable (a true RGB SCART lead carries several different video signals on diferent pins); it is not possible to do this using a cable alone, unless the cable is a SCART wired for composite use, which is what effectively happens when you plug the composite lead into the SCART adapter block supplied with the PS2.
I obviously only use Region X for DVD's other than R2 HOWEVER, I have the Blaze RGB scart cable and have it constantly set to RGB (via the selector switch).
I NEVER have a green screen though when playing DVD's (regardless of Region or whether using Region X or not).
So, what the hell is going on there?
The only thing that I have is the Region X gizmo plugged in but surely that's not enough to eliminate the green screen if the Reg X disc isn't being used?
Someone please answer this - it's bugging me now!

It just isn't possible for the PS2 to play colour through a true RGB Scart cable without the DVD Region X. The Green DVD is enable within the systems software, a cable cannot alter this.
