The stories of broken PS2s aren't new. It's just that I never cared until my own PS2 arrived.
Also, I used to figure you hear of more breakages because more people have the consoles. That doesn't seem accurate though.

But are parts actually intended just to 'get through' the warranty period?

Sony make a loss on each PS2 the sell, yes?
And they make the money back through sale of games and accessories.

So presumably if a PS2 owner's machine breaks, then they buy a replacement, both the buyer and sony lose money (one more than the other, obviously).
So, presuming quality components don't cost *that* much more (do they?), sony would do better to make machines that last.

Plus, if someone buys a replacement PS2, it takes money they'd buy games with otherwise, and they're less likely to stick with the sony brand in the future, so once again it's not in their interests to sell pap machines.

Maybe other PS2 owners can help me here - When your machine breaks out of warranty, can you pay sony to fix it, or do you just have to replace it?

The former seems to put us back on track for alleging sony to be a bunch of cheeky pirates proving how easily a fool and his money are parted.
The latter suggests they're just victims of incompetent product design...

Thoughts?

That's probably over a million PS2s replaced...

I bought a DVD player (from SR :|) and one month after the warranty ran out, it broke, so I'm stuck with a cack 2nd hand player for £45 :(

It a guess but nearly EVERYONE I know at college who brought there console at launch is having 'read' problems with it now.

I however know I can just keep switching mine to a new one if it breaks down. I therefore feel like going and licking myself.

The faults are all starting now.

Basically. We replace a LOT of PS2's at work. If you actually look at the statistic I believe 10% of all the PS2's that are from launch will have been replaced by now. The total figure of the PS2's sales will thus take that increase, and Sony can falsely claim to have sold that many consoles.

When you buy a PS2. You are buying crud.

The faults are pretty new to me.
I had problem with the PSX in that the runners on the laser wore out after 4 years of constant playing, this was due to them being plastic. I replaced them with metal myself and problem was sorted.

With the PS2 I gather most of the problems are unfortunate just like the problems faced with most electronic products.

From experience I know of folk who have phoned sony even though the warranty had expired and they still have offered to fix it for free.

I don't know if you can pay sony to fix them, I know there is a sony shop in glasgow and I would guess if I took my PS2 in there then they should be able to have it fixed (if it was broke). I guess it could be cheaper though to get someone who works with PC repair etc to have a look at it.

Ive been hearing loads of faults with peoples PS2s lately, which makes me wonder how the heck my PS2 is still going.

Dunno whats up with them all, probably just user related. Users not cleaning the vents out as Sony suggest or something else.

The most common fault is the laser though. Its just got knocked off a little or something. Not sure.

Ah well, Im expecting mine to blow up every time I play the thing. Hopefully it wont die for another few years.

;o)
