Delays they happen all the time particularly from the Nintendo camp Zelda, Mario, Perfect Dark and so many more, brilliant ideas sadly they all suffered delay after delay after delay.

Why do games get delayed?

Its simple they have a plan when it will get finished but they tinker with it add that extra weapon, that extra bad guy, that extra light this all adds on to development time and causes delays.

Surly developers could take this into account before hand, and anyway this doesn't account for major delays I still believe delays are bad and are putting Nintendo into deep water.

It is bad and annoying but games don't always turn out as planned, those who have enjoyed Mario 64 will of realized the Bowser levels were slightly odd much much more linear now what would you think if I said the entire game was to be like that. Now the original plan for the game might of got released when it was planned but of course the game took a completely new direction and became a full 3-D world, which we know and love today. Goldeneye originally was going to be an on rails shooter like Sin and Punishment. Can't imagine it, can you? Major changes like this cause major delays.

Well it seems that games are delayed for good reasons I suppose we should be grateful Nintendo ignore the public when it comes to things like this or Mario and Goldeneye would be completely different games and not as innovative and original as they could be.

Well Nintendo do to a certain extent listen to our moans, which is why, games come out earlier than normal. Mario 64 may have seemed a finished game but Yoshi was planned to be playable like in Mario World on the SNES and of course he wasn't. Goldeneye was going to have an all bonds cheat for multiplayer by being able to play as all the bond characters and many mission objectives were ditched.

So Nintendo could of delayed them further but chose not to as we kept moaning.

Yes but still Nintendo receive so much slack when it comes to delaying games and consoles.

Is there anyway out of the situation Nintendo are in we don't want them ruining their major titles but we don't want them delaying can they win?

Well there is away. Donkey Kong would of spent years in development but the game was announced not even a year before its release quite frankly what we don't know can't hurt us if we didnít know about Zelda 3 years before it came out would we of been so annoyed by the constant delays???

Good point so Nintendo shouldn't really announce a game until they think it is on track for a release. If Zelda was announced when it was deep in development rather than at the early stages then we would have no problem. But then again what if there is an unexpected delay due to perhaps technical difficulties????

Another simple method that Nintendo are implementing now announce the game just don't announce when it comes out or only announce a vague release date like Spring or the first quarter of the year. If Nintendo announces a European release date for the Gamecube it could be delayed so they have a spring 2002 date therefore if it does get delayed we won't know about it so it won't upset us.

But now were complaining we donít have a release date!

Exactly so can Nintendo win?

Here's to the Future

For a game to be delayed is annoying, but when it's finally released the then you maybe even more happy to recieve it because of the long wait.

Games like REsident Evil 2 took over a year longer then expected because of delay due to the fact that they scrapped the original game and did the whole thing over again, seems stupid but I'm not disappointed that they did.

It gives them more time to make things better for us, and although we get annoyed at it, we must remember they ain't doing this for themselves, they're doing it to make us happy(and to make more money obviously;) )

Games, like all software projext get delayed because software developers are optimists :)

When you ask a developer how long it will write a piece of software he will generall quote a time it will take to write the essential components... Forgetting that the little extras, tweaks, hacks and debugging, generally takes three times as long than the core components did to wirte...

Thats ignoring the three of four show stoppers that apear unexpectedly as your wirting the essential bits and pieces...

Unfortunatly... the distance between busness men (distributers) and developers is, as the business becomes attains greater validation, growing at an enourmous rate...

The distributers have a set time schedule to work to, through with, they woring to a bigger picture, have to arrange marketing, advertising, timing the release of the producit to, hopefully, maximise its selling potential... they are also the one dealing with the expenses, which recent, have, for some reason (see graphics) have syrocketed...

(since the essential, bare bones coding behiond many games is essentially the same as it was for the PS, the SNES even the speccy)...

The result is, (EA being particualy responcible for this - Black and White, Ultima9, etc...) many games are released a long time before they are ready... Curiously, though, Carbon Copy games (the latest Fifa, or Formula 1 titles, etc...) which are made by commitee and to a deadline without trying anything really all that new, always seem to be released by their deadline

On the other hand, developers, who are creating software which is becomes, after months, sometimes years, of sweat, blood, toil... and more importantly to the English developer, loss of drinkking time and sex...

(at least thats what the last six months of development are like, the first six involve alcahole, currys and the assurance that theres loads of time to satrt yet!)

Often becomes a more personal beast... perception of the development changes from the production of a game to sell, more of the completion of the title to the teams imagining...

More popularly, estimating the time it takes to write a piece of software is very much a hit and miss affair, you can state the time you think it can be done it, (then times it by 3 + 6 top get a more accurate estimation) ... but you cant never really hit a solid realistic mark... Apart from programming complications... problems with conflictions... unexpected major bugs... unforseen design problems...

Then at three o clock one morning you decide that you'll neeed to completly wrewrite the entire landscape generation for the 3D engine, using the new system you've realised it much faster, smaller and produces a much better output than that youve 'just' gotten to work, which you then spend the next 6-9 hours furiously implementing, before realsing that there was a fundemental flaw in the idea which stops it from working, which is why you didnt implement it in the first place... and that in installing the new design, you made some important alterations to the master code without making a sufficiant backup, which itself is going to take 6-9 hours to put back to where it was before you started :)

... There are so many things that can, and do, go wrong with development... at all stages... even before compremises are made between software, graphics, playuability tweaks, etc...

All this time theres some guy from distribution on your back wondering why the program isnt ready yet, when it will be ready, why its taking so long, why not leave that bit out of the game (since the players never knoew it was supposed to be there in the first place, they wont miss it - dont worry about that we can patch that problem up after its released, it only affects 75% of all gamers after all)

All in all... its a wonder we ever get the games at all? :)

I don't mind waiting if it means that the game I get to play is better. I won't die if I don't get the game tomorrow.

Start from the bottom and work your way up... there's no rush!

I'd say the bottom was PIKMIN - You know... in the grass and all that... the Luigi, because that on the ground too... then Melee, because that varies, and then Rogue Leader - because it's in space...

Anyway... :D
