Have you considered applying to the company that's laying people off ?
I know it's a long shot, but just maybe they'll lay loads off and then try to start 'rebuilding' their staff, or perhaps they'll lay people off, your other company will poach someone who wasn't going, and you could creep into the vacancy...

I'd quite like a lottery win. I never buy a ticket, but I do have premium bonds that haven't earned me anything in the year and a half since being bought.
Oh, good news is I will be doing the masters though - spoke to my parents, they can cover the shortfall in the funding. :^)
