When someone goes on about something for so long that it makes you want to scream it usually means one of two things:
1. It's a complete pile of pants.
2. It's the best thing since, well, something really good.

You know what I'm talking about by now I'm sure - yes, it's another blimmin' GTA3 post.....

When I first spied this title several months ago I wasn't really all that fussed. I like the original version quite a lot although it wasn't exactly game of the decade.
Controversial? Yes
Different? Yes
Best game ever? Certainly not.

Screenshots of GTA3 didn't really look particularly impressive and in many ways I still stand by my initial reaction - Driver 2 with an 18 licence.

I've played it now though and I'm going to retract everything negative that I've said about this game so far - it's absolutely fantastic.

The thing is, I don't really know where to begin. Yeah so you can shoot people, you can steal cars and then run over the owner, you can beat people to death with baseball bats and you can even kill Police officers. That's pretty much the controversial part of the game and yes - it's all quite grim and disgraceful depending on how you look at it.

In reality though - it is just a game. The point is that you CAN go and do these things and it's not going to result in a lifelong prison sentence. To cover that the game has even been given an 18 licence.

So is it just being controversial for the sake of it?
I honestly believe that this is not the case at all.
The vehicle handling in GTA3 is superb - I've played driving games in which the vehicles handle less realistically than in this title!

Radio stations (several of them) can be accessed, you can even nick a Taxi and raise some money by picking people up like a normal cab driver would.

GTA3 is genius, the first part of Liberty City is huge and there is an intelligent game underneath the obvious violence.
If you're not 18 don't buy it, if you're going to go out and pull people out of their cars after playing it then don't buy it either - if you've got a wicked sense of humour and enjoy a superb game then go and get this now.

I honestly thought that this was going to be a case of "If you liked the first two then you'll love this". It's just not so - EXCELLENT.

That pretty much sums it up for me too Wookiee.

Longy seems much more interested in playing the game than doing it for real which is harmless enough.

18 is definitely an over-cautious rating but as a parent myself I do understand that you have to be careful sometimes.

Kingpin was no better than this - much more graphic in fact and even Planes, Trains and Automobiles was only a 15 and I can't think of a film that has more swearing in it!

It all depends what kind of 15-year-old you are, I suppose.

There are 15-year-olds who are complete idiots and think that nicking cars and avoiding the police is "hard" and "cool", and may well be tempted to try various GTA3 events for real.

And there are others who are sensible, mature people who see a game as just a game, and have no interest in stealing someone else's property and running down pedestrians.

I'm making no assumptions as to you personally, Longy, but your parents should know by now whether you are the type to be corrupted by such a game.

If you've played games like Quake, Soldier of Fortune, or even Red Faction, then I see no reason why you sholdn't play GTA3.

I can understand why it may have received an 18 on moral grounds, but I don't think it's really necessary.

One of the biggest crimes in GTA3 appears to be killing a policeman.

Whilst you're playing though you're only thinking "I have to escape or I'll get busted" - not "HAHAHAHAHAHA!!! NYA AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!! I MUST KILL ALL THE POLICE!"

I'd love a policeman to be on the forum who plays GTA3 and hasn't so far run over one himself. It's just part of the game.

Exactly!

So my point is - a parent has no visual reason to object, it's just a case of accepting it's just a game and that the person playing isn't going to think anything other than that.

I find that the best way to approach this game is looking at it like black comedy. Most of GTA3 (so far) has been hilarious - certainly not shocking.

In real life most people wouldn't approve of picking up prostitutes etc and that's probably the tamest part of the game!

Well... yes and no.

In Resident Evil, you're 'killing' what is already dead, or 'monsters'.

GTA3 sees you killing 'real' people, so I think it's an 18 based on moral grounding, rather than the weapons/gore factor.

Sorry for not replying quicker, my point is that if your dad is happy for you to watch Sav Priv Ryan (even just the first 15 minutes) then there is no way on earth he should have anything against the violence/bloodshed in GTA3.

The only reason I could see someone objecting to a 15 year old having this game is for moral reasons.

Gore and violence is not a reason for this game to be an 18 - Saving Private Ryan is seriously realistic and shocking - GTA3 is a game that lets you do illegal and immoral things.

Res Evil CVX isn't an 18 and violence/gore-wise I would say that GTA3 is no worse than that.

Incidentally, the BBFC (who gave the 18 rating) passed the game without making any modifications.
