I believe in the freedom of information. If something can be free, it should be free. Software can be copied for free, so it should be free. This leaves the problem of actually paying the people responsible for making the software.
This should be done from government funding, via increased taxes. The money is then doled out to the various companies based on how highly rated their product is by the customer. optional donations of course are a possibility.
This not only decreased software produciton costs as companies no longer have to worry about copy protection, but also means that people who make a living form illegal software are out of a job - and many of these people are the sorts who are technically minded people. People who break the copy protection on software. people who are as likely to spend their time making improvements to existing software.
A world without computer games would mean that we would all be gathering round the Monopoly Board arguing other who gets the car and how much you owe the next person for landing on Old Kent Road when there is 2 hotels there!
