Well, me and Phil both reckon we need more hardware posts. So, in a desperate attempt to get more in here, I racked my brains and came up with a fantastic idea! Sadly, United scored and i was so busy celebrating I forgot. So instead, what specs are your PC?

What? Its hardware isnt it?

This is the kind of thing that's going to be hard - despite SR not stocking any products relating to this (or any half-decent range of them), we can't advertise "competitors", who operate in a different field of computer components..The more people on MSN or IRC as well, the better.

Second hand may be your best bet, retail prices have dropped significantly recently (especially on athlon T-birds), so the second hand market has fallen even further to keep up. Don't worry too much about second hand hardware, I've never had problems, and many sellers now have IDs on hexus.net - a pc hardware site, but users.hexus.net acts as a directory of sellers, with comments and recommendations.

Like I said, you could pick up a new cpu/mobo combo for around £150 second hand, but going for new parts, you're looking more in the range of £200-£250.

Quick note: If anyone ever has old hardware they don't need, I'm always looking for parts; either free and I'll pay postage or for a price, depending on the age. Find me on MSN or IRC if you want to get shot of anything..

cjh, you could get a new AthlonXP for £120, but you'll almost certainly have to upgrade your motherboard (I -think- all athlon 600s were slot, which is no longer supported). A new mobo and a 1GHz axia or suchlike could be had for about £150, and if you happen to find an axia y you could take it up to 1.6ghz with sufficient cooling..

for £100, find out what mobo you've got, and we'll work something out, if the mobo is half decent, a cpu and ram may be all you need. if not £100 is hard to work to.
