I guess one of the best things is anonymity. You can say what you like with little "real" repurcussions. This also has a down side as in there is less consequence of your actions on the net. If someone takes exception to what you are saying then there is no "real" consequence apart from the odd verbally abusive post.
Similarly I was e-mailing someone I met on the net in the States. It was fairly casual but her postings got more and more grim. Marital troubles, feeling fairly low etc and then she stopped posting. I got a bit concerned and more concerned when I realised there wasn't anything I could possibley do about it. Had it been one of my "real" friends I could have rung/gone round whatever to find out how she was doing. But written material is always more black and whtie than face to face contact. At least with face to face contact you know a) a bit of background on the perons b) you can read body language. You can't on the net.
One of the joys is obviously you can be a bit of a social tourist. Chat to people/about things that you wouldn't in real life. But equally it has repurcussions and consequences. I'm talking myself into a corner here so I'll shut up. So any thoughts anyone?
There was a thread where people could put their pics up, and everyone (bar 2 or 3) bottled out.
I like being The Shadow, means you get taken for what you say and not appearances.
For instance:
A woman that posts here about intelligent things. She is taken at that, and seen as an intelligent, vocal person.
She is attractive? Then some will (unfortunately) discount her opinions as a "bimbo".
A man that posts here about intelligent things. He is taken at that, and seen as an intelligent vocal peson.
He is attractive? Then some will (unfortunatley) discount his opinions as a "jock"
Just having one medium, words, gives you a level playing field.
That way, you can only be judged on "what's on the inside", which is all that matters in the end.
I have finished relationships with a couple of women that have been stunning, but dull to talk to.
And I have had relationships with women that aren't going to be appearing on the cover of FHM anytime soon.
However, I have landed the perfect woman.
She is intelligent, in a very well paying job as a designer, is an actress and can talk about civil disobediance until the cows come home
AND
She rocks my world big time.
A woman that I can talk to until the stars burn out, and floats my boat big time.
I can ask for no more.
So words are the most important, ultimately, to me.
> The net is good because your image is totally defined by your actions.
No
> voice, no face. You have complete control.
But don't you ever get curious? What do they look like etc? As you said thats part of the reason it is good you can't judge by anything other than what they write. Simplifies things. But curiousity.........
No voice, no face. You have complete control.
Ive never seen you in here before........
*Kicks Tilts as$ out of the forum*
