...Just last week I accompanied Namco of America (Namco Hometek) to Nintendo HQ at Redmond WASH. To our surprise, Capcom, Konami, Sega, and Square Reps are there too. It seemed Nintendo has gather up only the five most important Japanese developer for an "insider only" meeting. During the meeting, Nintendo layed out their plans for the GC and GBA for the next five years and let me tell you, it's quite impressive to say least. I can't tell you the you the details because of what I like to call the "NDA Dance" but let just say there are some major surprises in the coming years. Some good, some bad.
Anyways. After meeting and a tour of the facilities and seeing some of the games, which impressed the reps by the way, we settle down and had some "free time" to talk to eachother and enjoy some games (Nintendo, so good of them, had set up several GC kiosks and we can experience Nintendo games first hand. I didn't play any although SSB:M did attracted me to it in the end, all I was interest was talk and guess who're the first rep that I talked with?).
Well, the Square reps was nice and very friendly but however, you can tell that they are being "misplaced" by Nintnendo. All other reps has at least one Nintendo "guide" that tell them about the games, how to play them etc. Square reps are just in a corner looking, like some outsider. To say the relationship is poor is to say the least. After introduced myself and who I represents we started talking and my first question is of course, just why you and Nintendo hate each other so much? well, here is the answer and it's a lot worse then what it's being told publicly.
Here is what I gathered form both Square and Nintendo.
The rep looks at me with sad eyes and said. "Pride and arrogance." "Pride and arrogance." To make a story short. It all started with the N64 and the cart format. To say Square was not happy was to say the least. They try to convince Nintendo to go with CD-Rom and Nintendo disagreed and then there was the cost and Nintendo's strict control on cart pricing. Square did not like it and when Sony made a deal they couldn't refuse, they left.
That may be the end of it right there had not Square lost their mind and did the stuff that came later. To say Square was MAD at Nintendo was an understatement. They are so mad that they want Nintendo pay for "their mistreatment," to quote the rep, and "abandoning of their partner." They want to do something that would really hurt Nintendo and here is where everything went to hell.
To say Square is proud is to say the least. To say Nintendo is proud is to say the least, especially after the successful cooperation that made FF games and other Square games so successful. To make an example, there is Super Mario RPG. When that game sold well for the SNES. Both Nintendo and Square took credit and there was a huge row over who should get the most! In fact, even before the break-up the relationship has already became chilly and the break-up was the final push. Now Nintendo could've cared less. At that time, during my talk with Square's rep and with Nintendo, Nintendo had pretty much got Enix locked-up and all it takes was to sign on the dotted line and Dragon Quest (Warrior) VII is Nintendo's. In fact Yamauchi PERSONALLY engaged Enix and negotiated with them. Nintendo thought that they had a VERY legitamate contender against FF and when Square left, and also Ghouls n' Ghoust 64 (remember this game?)Nintendo just said good-bye and went back to the 64. However, Square decided that their "revenge" will start there.
The first hint of what will happen came when Square started to bad-mouth the 64. Some true, some not. But even then Nintendo just laugh it off. They had faced much worse from Sega and they survived. And they just thought it was a jelous former partner venting their anger, that's all to it. Nintendo never thought Square would take this blood feud much deeper than just calling the N64 names. That was what went on publicly. On the inside. Square started to move. First, Suzuki personally went to Enix and tried to convinced them to tear-up the nearly signed contract and support the PSX instead. However, Enix could've cared less at first. But then Square add Sony to the mix and started to really rachet up the pressure, even offering to pay for the development of Dragon Quest for FREE. Some of the tactics bordered on the illegal and some of things beings said, as admitted by that rep, could get Square sued by Nintendo in court. Finally, Enix was convinced and informed Nintendo that DQ is now on PSX.....the week before Nintendo was suppose to announce it. I mean Nintendo got everything planned, there was suppose to be this huge surprise announcement, a party and everything else but "poof" it was gone in an instant. To say Yamauchi was mad was to say the least. But still Nintendo calmed down Enix went but they thought they could still do fine. All Nintendo wanted to know was why. Well, Enix won't tell them because they do not want to deal with the fall-out. That's when Square took a dip into the stupid pool.
From that rep, it seem Square want Nintendo to know just who caused Enix's defection. I told him what they were thinking! and with a chargin on his face. He said they were really childish back then and were, "let's see how you American said it. 'Thinkin with your rear rather than your head!'" I was shocked to say the least at anyone being so dumb and stupid at the sametime but that's what that rep said. "We're dumb and stupid at that time. Really dumb and stupid. All we thought was stabbing Nintendo as hard and cause the most pain as possible, not what what will happen in the future, like we might want to go multi-platform."
Well, to conclude this. About four days later, Yamuchi received a post-card that basically said. "Now how do you like being hurt?" Signed Square with a huge Enix. Let's just say it's good that we never saw Yamuchi's reaction to that post-card. Square did not stop there. They went all out to try to convince just about every Japanese developers not to support the 64 and made no effort to hide it. Some where success, some where not. While Square was smiling at their "campagin," events were taking place that soon made it clear just how stupid
their actions were.
In just two years, things changed. Well, the 64 did not sold well, butit still did rather good, better than what Squared hope for. Most important, there was no good RPG on the system and anyone who released an RPG will do well to say the least. Then there was the GBC. The little console that could. To say GBC was earning money for Nintendo and any developer for it in droves. Square, who is commited to the PSX and only the PSX (the rep said that they told Nintendo that they would never develop for any Nintendo console again. Words, he said with a wince, that came back and haunt them). To say Square was salivating at all the money earned on the 64 and GBC is an understatement (Goldeneye, top selling game for two years. Money earned. Close to 2 BILLION. Pokemon, nothing left to be said). But of course Square won't admit it then so they went and developed for the WonderSwan but then a little known film known as Final Fantasy: The Spirit Within really destroyed that.
We all know about the cost. Over 120 million dollars where spend on this money. Is that really the true cost? Nope, not by a long shot. From that rep, who seem to be rather high up in Square, I got a startling and shocking figure.
You see, a Final Fantasy movie was planned as early as 1993! It's called Final Fantasy: Dreams (it's a codename of course but it would've been a FF film) and would be released with live actors with state of the art computer animations. But Movies like Jurassic Park and Terminator 2 shot that full of holes so Square went with a new plan call FF: Dreams II. It would've been a totally computer animated film but then Toy Story beat it to it and well..... Finally, Square just decided to do something really radical that eventually turned out to be FFSW. Total cost of this. Close to $100 million! That, however, is a drop to what comes next!
In order to do what would be SW, Square need some serious workspace and talent. To that end, Square built a lab at Hawaii and renovate it with some state of the art equipment. Total cost from the rep, close to $500 million! then they hired some top programmers and transfered some of their own, spend well over $200 million on this and then another 100 million in promotion of it. Total cost, close if not over 1 BILLION! and what did they get some cheesy 20 or 30 million in the U.S. In fact the rep told me that Square probably won't be able to make back the development cost for the movie even with video/DVD rental/sell! That's a huge blow! In fact Nintendo warn Square NOT to do it because of the similar experience with Super Mario Bro. But not only didn't Square listen, but also took it personnaly and is one of the reason why Square left Nintendo. In hind-sight, the rep said that they should've listened to Nintendo on this point.
With such lose, Square is really in financial heat and want to correct it. They could have made it cost back just on PS2 along but that will take time and it would really impede future growth and plans (at one point 25% of Square's cash flow went to SW). Square want to correct this quickly but unfortunately, there is no quick way to do it except the GBC and GBA and Square really do not want to face this but on the same dice, Square had reached "the ceiling" with the PS/PS2 and the WonderSwan is getting beat-up in the hand-held market (in fact the rep told me don't be surprised if the WS dies in the next year, becoming another mantle piece, headstone, or trophy in the GBC/GBA case. The number of units shipped is already down, games in planning are being secretly cancelled, and developers are jumping ships. In fact, he joked, don't be surprised if Square end up as the only supporter of the "Swan"). The money has to come else where and since XBox is relatively unknown and Sega is in a heap of trouble and future unsecure so Square actually swollowed their pride and went to Nintendo again.
The negotiation actually started two years ago! To Say Nintendo didn't welcome them back with open arms was to say the least. The rep saw the negotiation from begining to the end and said the first time, Nintendo basically had them sit in a room for six hours and in a joke of that post-card, hand them a post-card with a GBA in the front and the phrase, "is this what you want to develop for?" in the back. From then on the rep knew it would be a hard fought fight.
After much cajoling and begging in which Sqare offered exclusive (as in forever on the GC. No PS2 or Box version) version of a sequal to Einhander, Parasite Eve 3 and a limited (timed) exclusive version of Chrono Trigger 3 that would appear on the GC first. Even to the point of offering making Super Mario RPG for free and then letting Nintendo release it and keep ALL of the profit. Unfortunately, Square don't want to lose Sony either and was forced to keep them in the negotiation. Sony did not like it. They were eventually convinced that letting go of Parasite Eve and Einhander will not hurt as much but Chorno Trigger 3 on GC first NO WAY! So Sqaure went back to Nintendo with the bad news and Nintendo said no way, they want at least either FF or CT 3 to be exclusive to the GC and that's that. Square went back to Sony and finally had Sony to say that Nintnedo can have CT 3 (no FF) BUT, only after it comes to the PS2 first. Square went back to Nintendo and Nintendo at first said NO WAY IN HELL. But after more pleding from Square Nintendo relented and said that CT3 have to GC and PS2 at the sametime but then Sony said no way. CT3 have to be on the PS2 for at least a year before it goes to the GC. Nintendo said no way and that was that. The rep was frustrated to say the least! He said that when the final negotiation broke down he went back home and want to take out his Kendo sword and bash everything in sight! Then last month, near GC launch, came the surprise announcement of RE on GC. Sony as caught off guard to say the least. The negotiation was conducted under total secrecy and nobody knew. Until the day before the announcement, Sony thought that RE was in the bag. Nope, that's when Sony decided to buy out Square and keep it firmly in the PS2 camp. They can not loose another franchise. Before they can but with the defection of such franchises as MGS 2, and RE, Sony can't anymore.
So that brought us back to that party. Here was square standing all along with nobody near them while Nintendo is treating everybody else like king. I felt sorry for them but what can I do?

Thoughts?
The GBA is even bigger to make money on than the PS2.
The sames retail at very close prices but compare to devellopment prices of the horribly difficult and complex 3D style of the PS2 to the nice simple sprite nature of the GBA and you see that the GBA is much more profitable.
What's more, there's more GBA's sold than the PS2 (in a shorter space of time) so you can see which one's more valuable to work on.
Sony have a 19% share in Squaresoft now, so the chances of Final Fantasy or any other Square game coming to the Gamecube is remote.
Nintendo only want Square's games on the Gamecube though.
Final Fantasy for most (only MGS2 is more sought after - and that is being made by a company who make's Gamecube games...) is the PS2's biggest selling point.
Nintendo don't need Final Fantasy on the Gameboy Advance as the little handheld is already a rip roaring success.
If you don't get Square games on the Gamecube (to Nintendo's advantage), then you most likely won't find them on the GBA (a serious blow for Squaresoft).
At the end of the day, Yamauchi, the Nintendo boss should put away this feud in for the sake of us Nintendo fans. We'd love to see Final Fantasy on the Gamecube and GBA and with Sony's share being 19% then it's possible if Nintendo are REALLY nice to Squaresoft.
I can't really see that happening though...
> I thought TOCA was done by CodeMasters?
Yes, but their logo appears in the loading.

> Er, that guy is Miyamoto.
Nope I was refering to Hiroshi Yamauchi actually, fair enough ol' Shigsy isn't exactly taking to the idea but this guy is eledgedly totally against it.
They had a green and yellow logo, yes?
Er, possibly, I can't really remember.
All I know is that they did the fantastic Lotus Turbo Challenge games on the Amiga, and I wondered if they were still about.
They made loads of games for the PS, can't remember which ones. They had a green and yellow logo, yes?
But I don't *think* they were doing the re-make. Not 100% on that though.
Also, anyone here know what happened to a company called Gremlin? They did some great games for the Amiga.
Seem to have just disappeared now though...
Konami have bought Hudsonsoft? Groovy, didn't they make Bomberman and Bloody Roar?
