Which of the titular activitie do you prefer? Something that challenges you, or something that you enjoy while playing?

Some people may say they are the same thing, but I don't agree. How many times have you been stuck on a level in a game for ages, and when you finally manage to do it, you think "Thank god for that, I'd better save it quick so I don't have to do it again."

It's happened to all of us, and it means what you've just done can't be enjoyable. Becuase if it was enjoyable, you wouldn't mind doing it over and over again. Like sex, or llama trecking.

Games like GT3, Deus Ex, Half Life, MGS etc etc, all recognised classics. But they're just not enjoyable - in my view. They offer a challenge, not enjoyment. You get a sense of achievement when you finish the game or the level, but while you're playing it, there's no fun, no pleasure to be gained.

Until you finish it, then you look back and say "Yup, I did that. I beat the game".

So many times when I've been playing GT3 I've thought to myself "I'm not actually having fun. I'm just doing this as it's a challenge." Surely other people must think the same?

Other games are fun to play while still being challenging.

Games like Tony Hawks, Soul Calibur, Goldeneye, Mario Kart etc are all fun to play. They don't just offer a challenge, they offer enjoyment as well.

These are games that you can have a laugh while your playing. You don't have to be serious and give 100% concentration all the time. Either in single or multiplayer, you can just mess about while you're playing.

If you do that in something like GT3 or MGS you die/lose straight away. Where's the fun in that?

I suppose it depends what sort of person you are. Some will enjoy the challenge of getting onto a porn film set, others would rather get there easily, and spend more time watching.

See?

So, which do you prefer, fun, or challenging?

I enjoy the challenge.

But you know when you just can't quite do something, such as beat a record, I'll play and play and play, even after it stops being fun, because of the challenge.

It's one of those daft things, if a challenge is set, you feel you must take it on, even if it's no fun, just for the sake of it?

I suppose for me I like to always have enjoyment, but there must always be a challenge as well.

Something that is similar to what you are pointing out here YH, that really gets on my nerves with computer games - particularly multiplayer, is playing against/with people who don't care how they win.

When I play a game that involves winning, which face it most do, I feel that it's more important to me how you gain that victory, rather than the fact that you do win. Here's some examples of what I mean, for both single and multi player format games.

GT3.
I really like the GT games, Gran Turismo was one of the reasons that I bought a PSone in the first place. When I play GT3, I try and balance the car I'm driving against the CPU cars as far as bhp is concerned. I want to win the race, but I want it to be a good race, not me streaking ahead because my car is several classes better than the cars that I'm racing against. I know that other people do it though and I can't see the point in that. Sure you'll win, but it can't be that rewarding to do so.

Sports Games
I tend to be a bit of a purist when playing sports games, I want them to simulate the sport as much as possible. I'm not a big fan of playing sports titles multi player, because I get frustrated when I play against people who aren't interested in playing a football game, all they care about is the fact they win. I find that it spoils the game experience for me and I get no enjoyment from it. Playing against some one with a similar mind set however is completely different, the game is great and I don't mind if I get beaten - because I enjoyed the game.

I suppose that in the end I prefer to be challenged by a game, because I gain enjoyment from that challenge. Remove it, by either taking advantage of the game or resorting to boring formulated winning tactics and the game looses it's appeal.

I think I prefer gaming for pure fun. Now I am probably going to cause an arguement by saying this, but thats one of the main reasons I buy Nintendo consoles. Never have I played a Nintendo game which I haven't enjoyed playing....unless it is one of the very rare ported games such as Resident Evil 2. But in a way I am contradicting myself as I love a go on Tony Hawks once in a while.

Playstation games tend to be challenging, but not always fun. This is probbaly one of the factors that makes more adults/18+ people buy the console. They aren't always looking for fun, more than likely they are looking for a challenging game which they will remember. Now don't get me wrong, I look for these things as well, but they have to be fun. Fun should be Nintendos middle name as I have to say I have enjoyed playing every single game on a Nintendo game and not just played it so I oculd say I have completed it.

I enjoy both, I love games with hard puzzles that make you go red in the face with frustration, but I also likes driving games where you can, well, race nice cars against your mates :)
I also think playing games that get your blood pumping faster are great, where tactics count and every move makes a difference, you know that if you get shot once more you die, but your so close to the end of the mission, but the next room is heavily guarded! but games that get you this worked up are few and far between.
I think Zelda: Majora's Mask had some very hard challenges, the one that sticks out in my mind was a very narrow icy bridge, you had to cross it (while in a Goron's body/Goron's are rock people) that part is quite easy, although you had to dodge boulders which were as big as the bridge, and every now and then there would be a strong breeze which would knock you off! I seem to think that was one of the hardest challenges, purely because it was at the beginning of the game.

great topic.

Sweet topic!

I'm not sure what I prefer overall, sometimes I like playing Metal Gear Solid (which has ceased to be a challenge, but still I know what you mean), or Onimusha or something such and yes its because I enjoy plugging away at games such as these so I can say "woohoo I finished it!".
But other times I prefer the idea of a more arcade experience were you just play for the enjoyment of trying to knock my friends out or just to skate around a bit, or just to shoot zombies with a light gun before my tea.

Good quality fun games like THPS2, have outstandign replay and lastability value and though MGS can be played many times through - it can't be played as often.
So I probably play mainly for the fun, but will always take on a new challenge when it presents itself.

I think RPGs are probably my favourite, FF or Zelda, I enjoy them in a fun based way while I'm playing, but then there's the challenge and sense of achievment as well.
Again, there are issues with replay - but they tend to last a while too.
