Once more I have been watching the news and reading the papers, and the predominant story has been the anthrax outbreaks in the States.
And once more, I find myself scratching my head and questioning what I am seeing and reading.
Just for me, myself and I, not trying to convince anyone else of the thoughts bouncing round my head, but I want to try and put them into words to see if they make any sense.

It has been mentioned, although not officially confirmed, that these attacks are related to the Sept 11th WTC disasters.
Everyone is looking towards Bin Laden and wagging their finger at him, Bush talking about ìHow we must fight this new war, they may use spores but we are a nation stronger than that. It will take more than a disease to eradicate the American way of life that they despise so muchî
Uh-huh, ok George, whatever is written in front of you mate. (is it just me or can anyone else see his lips move when he reads?).

However, watching CNN this morning before work and they were talking about how the ìCoalitionî has won the air war (The Taliban has no air-capabilities whatsoever anyway, but it does sound nice on the news to say that eh?).
They showed the ìalmost pointless anti-aircraft flak of the Taliban against the might of the Western Allianceî. Basically laughing at how badly-equipped the Taliban are.
And they are right, a rag-tag outfit with weapons bought on the black market and supplied by the USA almost 20 years ago.

Only now we have them behind this Anthrax outbreak in the USA.
A group that has no chemical weaponry ability whatsoever, a few guns and anti-tank emplacements liberated from the Russians, already using outdated gear when they invaded.
So Bin Laden is using biological warfare, despite living in caves?
Why use Anthrax?
Anthrax is not contagious at all.
The only way to be infected is by being exposed to large numbers of spores and the anthrax found in the US attacks belongs to the 'Ames' strain, common to Northwest America.
It was originally isolated in the 1930s and is widely used for laboratory cultures.
If you are committed enough to fly planes into buildings and incur the wrath of the USA, why then send poxy little anthrax letters to people? Why not use something deadlier and more effective if you are waging a chemical war?

And who are the targets of this anthrax attack?
The media system and Democrats. The groups that radical factions inside of the USA, domestic militia groups, always blame for their countryís ills.
All three major TV networks in New York City, the Capitol Hill complex in Washington and a tabloid newspaper company in Florida are now all sites of anthrax infection.
NBC anchorman Tom Brokaw in New York and Senate Majority Leader Tom Daschle in Washington were targets, as well as Dan Rather of CNN, but his assistant opens his mail and has contracted a very weak, non-lethal exposure to the disease.
The New York Times, the Washington Post and papers in Florida.
Florida? What the hell is in Florida?
Well, George W Bush Jr has a brother called Jeb, who happens to be Gov of Florida. (It was Jeb that prematurely announced Bushy had won in Florida, causing Al Gore to announce his defeat before things smelt funny and we were then subjected to the most farcical election to ever be seen in the USA).

Anthrax has been used as domestic terrorism long before this sudden outbreak:
Speaking about this recent appearance of anthrax, the Rev. Donald Spitz, spokesman for the violently anti-abortion ìArmy of Godî cheerfully announced that the flood of potentially life-threatening mail "made my day," but he denied having any knowledge of where the letters came from.
It's not the first time abortion providers have dealt with an anthrax scare. According to the National Abortion Federation, there have been at least 80 anthrax threats against providers since 1998, with an epidemic of almost two dozen publicised threats in 1998 and 1999.
This time, a chapter of the Army of God -- the underground antiabortion group in whose name a 20-year crime spree of arson, assassination and bombing has been carried out against abortion providers -- claimed responsibility. "You have been exposed to anthrax," each letter announced. "We are going to kill all of you. From the Army of God, Virginia Dare Chapter."

The right-wing Christian preacher Jerry Falwell (who believes that AIDS is Godís punishment for homosexuals and non-Christians) was on his cable-tv show on September 12th saying that God let the Sept. 11th attacks happen because we are an immoral people, and that the homosexuals and Pro-Choicer's were to blame.
Timothy McVeigh said that he bombed the Oklahoma building because ìof the nazi UK government that wants to take away our rightsî and labelled CNN and CBS as ìpropaganda toolsî.

Eric Rudolph was never called a Terrorist even though he was.
5 years ago, Rudolph was charged in three Atlanta-area bombings, including the 1996 Olympic park bombing in which a woman died. Investigators also suspect he was involved in a January 1998 explosion that killed a police officer and maimed a nurse at the New Woman All Women Health Care clinic in Birmingham, Atlanta.,
Some 200 law enforcement officers soon returned to the woods where Rudolph lived to track him down and question him, but he had disappeared.
In August, James ``Bo'' Gritz, the former Green Beret colonel and leader of the right-wing Patriot Movement, led about 40 volunteers into the woods to try to find Rudolph. They left empty-handed.
The trail has grown steadily cold, and now only a dozen police remain to follow up leads.
``All that's left up here are some investigators,'' said Macon County Deputy Kenny Cope, who knew Rudolph when they were growing up and later helped search for him. ``If they get a hot lead, they can call in the search teams.''

There have been a number of domestic groups waging terrorist war on the USA, militia groups that live in the hills and forests that believe the US government is ìZionisticî and refer to ìNew World Ordersî that seek to induce a police state. Waco, Ruby Ridge and a number of other groups that have ended up in massacres when they decided, rightly or wrongly, to engage the US government with weapons.

Basically, I find it hard to believe that a terrorist organisation across the world living in caves that hijack planes using box-cutters would then decide to wage chemical warfare on the USA, but use a non-contagious disease that emanates from North America.
I find it much more likely that militia groups inside of the US are using the Sept 11th attacks as a perfect cover to start their own little attacks.
Because right now weíre all looking at Afghanistan and quaking with fear at a group with no aeroplanes, no tanks and no other weaponry except outdated ordinance and the fervent belief that they are right.

Yeah, if it were Bin Laden it would give the coalition a good reason to break out the really devestating weaponry - if they found Bin Laden for example I wouldn't rule out the use of B52's/B2's deploying a small tactical nuke or some other destructive weapon. Of course it would be dependent on the location and obviously its going to be far better if Bin Laden's fate is less spectacular.

Not entirely sure I agree it's Iraq, but then I don't know for sure who it is so I can't argue the reasoning.

But, like yourself, I just dont see that this Anthrax thing is extreme enough for Bin Laden, considering what has happened recently.

But you are correct on whoever is doing it needs to be stopped.

Personally I believe the Anthrax is not Bin Laden's responsibility as his group seem to concentrate more on actual killing than terror- which, whilst some have died ( this is no little thing in itself ) the main effects have been to cause chaos to the infrastructure of the USA and spread fear amongst Americans and other coalition countries. In addition, far worse substances COULD hae been used. One counter to that theory though is that, whilst the Taliban/Al Queda don't care about the consequences of their actions, other countries who could supply the far more lethal substances may. Former Soviet Republics have access to worse substances but if it were traced back to them then the results would be devestating. Internal militia groups in America are also unlikely, as culturing the anthrax would require a private laboratory of which there are only so many. Unless its hidden very well, enough to avoid satellite detection, its a slim bet. Militia groups would generally target certain places or high profile people, but this method of attack using the postal system is effecting harldy any high profiel people and seems to be doing more harm to postal workers than anyone else. Again a counter to this is that the operation was messed up, but it would be difficult to plan this so soon if it were an attempt to capitalise on Spetember 11th.

The main suspect has to be...Iraq. The UN is refused access to bio/nuclear development areas even to this day. Saddam has been the only vocal foriegn leader to express no sympathy or regret at the attacks on September 11th. This attack seems poorly executed, which would indicate a rush to capitalise on September 11th using whatever was to hand. It has been carefully calculated to do damage to the USA but not enough so that there is an immediate mass hunt for the perpetrators. September 11th shocked the world, this is causing fear over the world. Our thoughts are on avoiding Anthrax, not getting whoever did it. For Iraq it would make sense - further debilitate your enemy but don't hit him hard. The gamble was that even if it is traced back to Iraq will the Coalition be preapred to fight a conventional war on two fronts ? The USA has capacity to fight two major conflicts, 3-4 regional wars, and sustain home security, on paper. In reality the USA/UK military cupboard is looking awfully bare at this critical time. Eurofighter development is stuck in testing hell, the Joint Strike Fighter is 2 years away as are the UK's super carriers.

I'm probably wrong, but I've shown my reasoning rather than blindly pointing, and whoever did this needs to be brought to justice, fast.

I would say that 100% of people who use this site are from England also.

As for your theory about students doing the Anthrax attacks. It's possible I suppose. No oubt universities have access to stuff like that, but it's whether it could be created in Military Form, which it is thought the attack stuff was.

I live in England, so even though we have no confirmed cases of anthrax, we are still bloody scared. I, for one, would prefer to see the UK supplying the US with information, supplies and bases to use, because Britain really doesn't need to be targeted by bin Laden, the al-Qaeda network or any other terrorist group. We saw many lives being lost in the nineties, thanks to the IRA, which is when this war on terrorism should have begun.

Alternatively, if other European countries actually helped the war effort with planes, troops and what have you, then I would be all too happy to help destroy terrorism. I am not for terrorism at all, I'm just scared that we are being dragged into this based just on the mind of Tony Blair.

Anyway, the anthrax cases. As far as I can see, any terrorist would be proud of what has happened, seeing as the threat of anthrax has terrorised the entire country. However, it does not look like the work of bin Laden. Firstly, he would probably use something which is more poisonous or contagious, such as smallpox, or even the plague, if he could. Secondly, after the revelation that the letters containing anthrax all came from the same postal area, it does not look like a typical bin Laden attack. In thios situation, he would probably send the letters each from a different area. Maybe he's trying to cover it all up, but the signs do not point to bin Laden.

Thirdly, as has been mentioned before, bin Laden would more likely go for a much bigger attack against the 'infidel' nation. If he was to use anthrax, he would probably use it in its most deadly form. Also, he would probably release it in a huge attack, such as by crop dusters, or by aerosol, if possible.

So, I do not think that bin Laden is behind these sickening attacks. My theory is that students living in America, unhappy with the government, are behind this. How they got the anthrax spores, I do not know, although it is fairly easy to get the anthrax bacteria. The nationality of the students, if they have committed these crimes, probably does not matter, although extremist students from pro-Taliban nations studying in America may be so angry with the government that they wish to attack it secretly. That is only my theory, I cannot confirm nor dismiss it.

And that's all I'm saying.

Someone has a grudge, and Anthrax has been sent before by right-wing groups to those they wish to "get"

Anthrax is a rubbish chemical weapon. Completely non-contagious, you can only get it from the source, not through anyone else.

And why, after the worst terrorist incident in history, would you then send non-contagious diseases to newsreaders and Democrat Senators?

I'm not saying it is or isn't Bin Laden, I'm just saying I'm looking at the facts as I see them and it doesn't make any sense.

Just mulling over in my head.

(Persil have announced that it was a poor time to send out free samples of their washing powder).

Just because those in the caves in Afghanistan can't get hold of anthrax it doesn't mean that someone in the US that believes in the same causes, or is taking orders from Bin Laden (or whoever the next face of evil will be) can't get hold of anthrax.

Afterall the letters were all postmarked from the USA.

Mind you, it's an ideal time for anyone else in the world to attack the USA, because they'll blame it on Bin Laden, no questions asked.

You make alot of sense. everyone is out to blame the afganistan bogeyman, without proof. how do we know the terrorists in afganistan even sent the stuff. Would have been hard getting to a mailbox with all those bombs blowing up everthing.

The letters have had handwritten messages with

'allah will rule'

and

'death to america'

In them

allah is tecnically the god america belives in anyway. sounds like one group trying to blame the terrorists. And it has worked.

Very true, but Anthrax is non-contagious.
You can only get it from the source, the USA would have to individually sniff the spores to cause any kind of wide-spread effect.
And like Wookie said, someone is doing this, but for a group that flew planes into buildings to get the world's attention and to hit America where it hurt - this seems a decidely rubbish follow-up.
Just personally speaking, but I find it much more likely that domestic, militia groups are thinking "Excellent, we can do this stuff and it'll get blamed on Bin Laden"
And then it just struck me:

A strain of Anthrax native to the USA
Targets are media broadcasters and Democrats, a specific group and not just Americans (the original victims of the WTC attacks).
A non-virulant biological weapon doesn't mate any sense.
Why go to that effort, after the meticulous planning of the WTC attacks, and send a non-contagious disease to newsreaders and Democrats?

The targets seem so specific and inconsequential.
Why kill thousands in the WTC and then send stuff to media departments instead of government buildings?

Just doesn't make any sense is all I'm saying

The anthrax attacks are definitely some kind of terrorist action, but I'm not convinced it's Bin Laden's lot either.

It could just be a long-planned attack by another group, which has tied in with other events by pure coincidence; or maybe someone inside the US has been planning it for a while and saw this as the ideal opportunity to unleash it and point the blame elsewhere.

As I understand it, Bin Laden's organisation do have chemical/germ agents, but not the weapons to deliver them - so this method would be ideal.

However, for a group sworn to wiping out everything that America stands for, I would expect something far more deadly and contagious than Anthrax, which is highly unlikely to do any widespread damage.

Of course, there are also other viewpoints. Just say for a moment that it *is* al Qaeda that's responsible, they could be using Anthrax simply to disrupt day-to-day life in the US; or, they could be doing it to prove a point: "This is only Anthrax, but think what we *could* unleash with this method..."

As for 'what's in Florida?'... well, a large tourism industry for a start. It *could* be an attempt to hit the US where it really hurts... in the pocket. Stop people travelling to Florida and you stop a large percentage of tourism revenue.

But that still doesn't mean that Bin Laden is responsible.
