The power of the X-box is very impressive but a consoles power and capabilities are not a major factor when determining the outcome of the infernal games console war. Everything relies on the games if the games are good the console is likely to succeed.

So then if Nintendo are seen as the greatest developer ever with the greatest games designer ever then why may I ask are Nintendo not lighting up the games market compared with other giants such as Sony? Well it isnít to do with the companyís ability it is more to do with what they make. Everyone knows that an obsessed beat ëem up fan should have a Playstation and a Platforming lover should of course be playing on an N64.

Why?

Well letís take the Beat ëem ups, Nintendo were once proud to be at the top of this genre in comparison with their rivals, Street Fighter and Killer Instinct ensured this. But these games were soon outdated and with the arrival of Sony it got even worse. Killer Instinct no longer grabbed the gamers like it used to, now gamers wanted Tekken or Dead and Alive. Nintendoís hold on the Beat ëem up genre had slipped and Super Smash Brothers (cheers Tony) is the only N64 beat ëem up that can compete with the giant Playstation games.

The Sony Playstation was also the console to have for survival horror nuts as the Playstationís games catalogue is simply swamped with them. Racing games meanwhile can be very odd, no snowboarding game compares with 1080 snowboarding (at the time), no water racer could even touch the beauty of Wave Race, Mario Kart is the worlds most famous and best fun racer, F Zero is stuff of legend and biker fans will instantly fall in love with Excitebike. Despite this racing fans prefer the Playstation when it comes to racers because of driving simulators. Looking at the Driving simulators on the N64 and all you see is a couple of Playstation knock offs and nothing comes close to GT on the PS1 and 2. The N64 meanwhile is the console to get if you like your first person shooters.

But thatís the past and unless I have just become illiterate I do believe this is the future of gaming. So is the genre pattern about to stay the same? Defiantly not, the racing side of things looks similar with the Gamecube racing games looking to be the same sort of ones found on the N64 bar the original Donkey Kong Racing. Ridge Racer is the major Gamecube driving simulator and every Playstation owner will tell you Ridge Racer is good but it is no GT. How about first person shooters? I personally feel the Gamecube is still the console to get but I would, Iím a Nintendo fan. Timesplitters and Red Faction are awesome games combined with Quake 3 and Unreal the PS2 line up looks great. How about the GC? Well all I can say is Perfect Dark! There is plenty more is on its heels including Metroid though which is a bit of an odd ball at the moment. I still feel the original Perfect Dark is the best FPS out on the market today and so therefore Nintendo still have a firm hold on that department but that is up to discussion. Third Person shooters meanwhile are firmly in Sonyís court Tomb Raider and Metal Gear Solid ensures that.

Platformers look the same, Sony are having more Platformers on their system but with Mario, Luigi, Banjo, Conker etcÖ I believe Nintendo have this part of the market wrapped up especially with Crash, Spyro and Sonic heading towards the Gamecube as well. Now what about RPGís, true RPG nuts should own a Gameboy (Pokemon) and a Playstation (Final Fantasy). The N64 had one true and one good RPG, Paper Mario; this one game canít compete with the amount of top class Playstation RPGís. Nintendo are changing that though, look at Kameo that does look good but if Nintendo want to pull in the RPG fans then they need to make an 128 bit PokÈmon game. But if youíre talking about RPG/Adventure then Nintendo have one lethal weapon and that is Zelda (donít forget Starfox Adventures mind) but many RPG fans will tell you this isnít a true RPG.

Puzzlers seem to be a Nintendo special with Tetris, Bust a move, PokÈmon Puzzle league and the mighty Space Station: Silicon Valley (I need to ask though is Evoís space adventure on the Playstation the same game?) but then again I donít know much about the Playstation puzzlers and as for the future only time will tell.

Sports games are a bit difficult, Sony do seem the best when football games are concerned but people seem to forget Nintendo have FIFA and ISS (particularly ISS) as well. But with great games such as Rugby on the PS2 it seems to be a Sony department, can the Sega sport franchise give Nintendo a fighting chance though? And with FIFA, ISS and SSX all Gamecube bound is there much difference between the 2 rivals?

Now Survival Horror, a great big swing has occurred from strongly in Sonyís corner to strongly in Nintendoís. The Gamecubeís amount of survival horror games were looking good from the start, Resident Evil 0 and 4 had been confirmed and combined with Eternal Darkness Nintendoís customers were being kept happy. Meanwhile Sony were getting Onimusha and Devil May Cry both look and play like a dream but Capcomís shock announcement that 6 Resident Evil games will be Gamecube exclusive (although 4 are actually updates). Any more Resident Evil releaseís will also be on the GC especially with Capcomís wish to keep the series on one console but the later releases are not tied down to the Gamecube they could appear on other systems.

That is a major change as is beat ëem ups, the worlds greatest N64 beat ëem up Smash Brothers is making a very welcome return on the Gamecube with Super Smash Brothers melee with includes 9 new characters all the old ones are back with updated moves and with tones new options. But what can compete with Tekken or Soul Calibur? How about Tekken and Soul Calibur! Tekken isnít confirmed yet but with the hype behind the GBA version it could well be and Soul Calibur 2 looks absolutely brilliant, could Nintendo finally have the beat ëem up market back? With Capcom becoming more dedicated towards Nintendoís short box of tricks Iím hoping Street Fighter could smash back and maybe just maybe a special 3D Killer Instinct game is in development by Rare, despite constant denials such a game is in development I still hold up high hopes.

I have examined many Genreís and as I had thought Nintendo are gaining lots of ground but they need to produce some ground breaking titles to make sure they donít lose their grip on the genreís they have already mastered such as the First Person shooter. Well do you agree with my analysis? Do you disagree? Whatever it may be please share your thoughts.

LOL @ Waverave! :D

WaveRace looks mighty fine, and looks just as good as SplashDown. I've seen in-game footage of both, and I have to say that they LOOK as good as each other - LOOK, being the all important word here. However, I have come to the conclusion that the GameCube pad will triamph over the PS2's, and that playing WaveRace will be like a dream.

For starters, the first difference between them is the craft that you use. SplashDown uses bigger, more powerful (I would assume) Jetboat things than the smaller, less powerful, yet easier to handle WaveRace Jetskis...thingies.

They are both going to be great.

SHOCKY

The PS2 is the console for FPS, unreal, red faction, quake, timesplitters 1+2, half life and so on, some even have mouse and keyboard support :-)

The N64 never got a decent car game did it, Mario kart isn't exactly what i'm talking about, The PS1 got loads colin mcrae, gran turismo, ridge racer 1-4, vrally, toca and now the PS2 has em all once again starting with GT3 but what about the gamecube, mmm just another mario kart?

Puzzle games don't take too well in the UK but Kurushi,Bust a move, tetris, wetrix 2 and fantavision are class titles already out, don't now about the gamecube but this is more than enough for me :-)

and Splashdown really puts waverave to shame ;-)

Actually the N64 has games a plenty for all ages. It's not a kids console. They have made so many speeches about it not being a kids console.

*Cough* GAD attempt *Cough*

But whilst on the topic, then I think your right about that. Different consoles have different genres and it was my understanding that the N64 seemed to be based at younger children. Only games such as Perfect Dark and Goldeneye showed what they could actually create on the worlds first 64 Bit console. The graphics were very kiddy and cartoony like which made it seem like a waste for hardcore games, such as myself.

The PS on the other hand was for everyone. With games such as Metal Gear Solid to ISS Pro Evolution to Barbie, the PS had it all and the graphics all seemed more realistic. They based on games such as beat'em ups such as the Tekken series and RPG's with the Final Fantasies.

The Dreamcast and Sege Saturn just aren't worth commenting on, so I won;t.
