According to NGC Magazine, this new style is being used because it is based before or at the same time as the original Zelda game. This was one of the earlier Links as they all have the same names, as do the Zeldas. For some reason the Zeldas and Links are always destined to be together in some way.
I suppose that's the most logical reason to explain this new look.

Shigsy ain't made a bad game...

But let's face it, although Zelda will be great (and I shall probably be buying it), can it ever be as epic as if it were truely cinematic?
What I would love Shigsy to do would be to create a completely different graphical style.
Let me explain by the use of analogies:
In films there has been a Canadian film made whereby everything is in Soft focus. That is, everything within a couple of metres of the camera looks like it is covered in vasaline, and anything further away is completely blurred- like a monnet painting. That's originality.
In games, Cell shading is a completely new way for games to be depicted. Another great example is Mario 64's use of 3D.
So, why doesn't shigsy go back to basics, and make some kind of graphical system that would truely mix the fantasy element of the game with the powerful engine of the GC.
Let's see what Zelda 128- 2 has in offer!

I think it was also to make it something different from everything else that looks really realistic.
I think reasons for the change were not only to make it different, unique if you will but to let allow more focus on making a great Zelda esque storyline and not need to worry about the fancy graphics.
I'm happy for Nintendo to make Zelda as it is now, but I want them to make another Zelda in the normal style.
The very early picture that I saw of zelda impressed me, lets hope that the new one gets sorted out pretty soon.
Arrr Zelda in its current mold is going to be GREAT!
