Poncy, overlong and dull movies for highbrow movie-posers to scratch their Spielberg beards to and say "Hmm, the imagery used to suggest the duality of our nature is brilliant, and the underlying themes of alienation are just perfect", whilst the rest of us sit there and think "This sucks, I could have watched American Pie 2"
2001:
The monkey bits are cool, but then it gets boring for ages in space and the ending is pure bollards. "Ah but it's left for your own interpretation". Yeah, whatever
Strangelove:
Peter Sellers is cool, and "You can't fight in there, this is the war room" is a good line, but c'mon..it's pants
The Shining:
This is actually not bad, which led me to believe that Kubrick didn't make this one really. Jack Nicholson is good, but he's just doing Jack Nicholson.
And, it's just not scary.
Full Metal Jacket:
The training camp is cool, but then it just turns into that old tv series about 'Nam that I can't remember the name of.
(Amusing fact: Private Pyle, the fat mental one is the guy in Men in Black that turns into the massive bug)
Barry Lyndon:
My head exploded waiting for something to happen in this one.
Spartacus:
It's alright, Kirk Douglas is cool but Gladiator did this much better
Eyes Wide Shut:
Awful, awful waste of 9hours. Tom and Mrs Tom go to a party and she says "I thoight about having that sailor"
Tom gets the hump and wanders about for ages looking confused.
The End.
(You dont see them nekkid that much so dont rent this)
There are others but I can't be bothered to make the effort to remember them.
Because Kubrick sucks.
Dr. Strangelove is a fantastic movie though. One of the best.
Eyes Wide Shut was a classic example of the power of jealousy overwhelming the pysche of a previously harmonious couple that were experiencing minor problems within the marriage, and Kidman's confession of the though of infidelity was the catalyst for the chain of events that led Cruise to a long dark night of the soul in his exploration of the possibilities of betraying both his own morals and the trust he placed so heavily on his spouse.
Kubrick's minimalist styling and aloof directorial style were indicative of the icy, repressed nature of the main characters and a comment on emotions in general.
You will notice that when they are a happy(ish) couple, both the lighting and genereal composition of the scenes are colourful and warm, but once Cruise embarks on his odyssey, the mood becomes distinctly chilly and un-emotional - to indicate Cruise's removal and detachment from his feelings in his attempts to explore the darker, more sensual aspects of his nature.
From the almost operatic nature of the initial party and the sombre tone of the masked orgy Kubrick is demonstrating the social-dance that must be performed in order to interract with others, whilst the denounement in the toy store at the end indicates that by coming together again as a couple, they have regained a child-like innocence and happiness.

(For everyone else)
Yep, Eyes Wide Shut smoked the pony alright.
The trailer made it look like you'd see them "doing it", but they didn't.
Nothing happened.
For 2+ hours, nothing happened.
This movie was horrid.
I tried to eat my face so I wouldn't have to watch this movie.

And this is why Mr Editions response was so highly amusing.
Yes, "the subtext on Mr Kubrick and his cold, detached style is a masterful metaphor on the alientation of the soul from human conditioning", but his movies still bore the pants of most people that don't hang about the NFT drinking Frappaccuinos and discussing why "Eisenstein's use of Mis-En-Scene in the Odessa steps sequence is the highlight of early cinematic editing technique".
Kubrick's movies are teeth-grindingly dull and exist to give the intelligensia something to stroke their little filmy beards to and feel superior whilst they don't like to read Empire because "it's for kids"
But it's ok Mr Edition, we still love you.
Kubrick is on of the 5 greatest directors ever.
In your opinion, I stated my opinion exactly for people to argue about it, but you're the only one.
Which means you're in the minority.
Which means you're wrong.
To say Kubrick is boring is to
> say Mozart had no talent, picasso had no vision and that this forum is full of
> intelligent, free willed opem minded individuals.
Easy Tiger!
Not everyone thinks the same, I think Kubrick is so far up his own pipe that he lost the plot ages ago.
But that's just what I say, you seem most hostile.
thank you for you valuable

This is funny because you're a newbie.
Trust me, you and I are on the same side, I was just trying to see if anyone disagreed.
And only you did.
I know a bit more about film than I let on, I just like to go fishing.
And someone always takes the bait.
thank you for you valuable valuable time, i hope i havent interrupted another viewing of Pearl Harbour or The Mexican or even Miss con*****.
Nope, onlu kidding. The Shining was a piece of class work, please don't deny that. But then Full Metal Jacket was awful, I watched that with a friend and looked at the comments on the back. 'Best War Film Ever' ect. Damn I hate hype, not only does it make you think more of the film then before but it also tends to be a load of rubbish anyways.
