Well, if you think about it, we are the next AI.
ìHuh?î You cry? Its all very simple (Complicated)
Our technology so to speak it over 2000 years old, by using the word technology I mean our body, heart etc. Technology over 2000 years old and it still works? How is that?
We have the ability to learn, I long time ago in the 1200ís? People were sitting down on a cold brick seat and basically crapping out the wall, anything like that seen today would be totally absurd! Thatís because over the 800ís years or so we have developed a new type of toilet, one that you can flush, and it smells all nice :o)
In computer games today there is AI, Artificial Intelligence, which is only as clever as we make if, and only has the ability to learn very simple things. Take thisÖ.
ÖGruntÖ
Ö.Patrol corridorÖ. Spot enemyÖ shoot Ö if hit Ö take cover Ö
That is basically what they do, clever, but not amazingly clever.
What Iím trying to say is that we will be the next AI, in the near/far future the AI in games will be so clever it will have the ability to learn, learn from your moves, learn to take a weapon from a dead friend/enemy. Learn to save their bullets etc.
Like us, if we were put in this situation where you have toÖ stop the enemy from getting into your base, fair enough, but things like fear etc Would kick in. You would say to yourself ìWhat if I get shot?î They would hesitate.
These sorts of questions will be placed into the AIís mind. The ability to think for themselves, the ability to learn.
You may say to me that AI in Perfect Dark can think for themselves but no, they are being programmed to do that. How silly is this,
If your gun jammed while in a firefight you would take cover and try to fix the problem, but in PD oh no. They stand there and say ìStupid Gunî This is amazingly clever in the gaming world but not too clever in the real world.
What you would have to do would be to give them a brain, but this technology is far from being found.
If you gave them a brain they could all go out and party :o) But then you could give them a brain and only let them have so much thinking for themselves, sure they could slack off a bit but they would still have to patrol the door, kill you etc.
They would be like real people but in a game, say like a new bloke to theÖ. Factory, he has to remember hisÖ pin code, in the first few days he would have to get his little piece of white paper with the code on and copy it but after a few weeks he would remember it, thus making him faster.
A rookie in weapons training is shaky and he hesitates, after some training he would be sergeant accuracy!
If you look at the AI in a game and then look at real people the similarity is not too obvious but then look closer. Look at racing drivers, look at Michael Schumacher (sp?) He drives very fast but he doesnít crash a lot, but when he crashes or is driven off the road, he temper is short, this could be like in GT3-4? There could be a very good driver but you could crash into him and he would basically go mental and try to run you off the road!
So the next time you see the AI in a game, it could be very much like you.

Like in games-AI develops slowly on the same console, but when a next-gen console is released, AI can increase rapidly.
AI is one thing which gaming definitely CAN improve in, by quite a lot. It's something I'm looking forward to as we delve more into the future of gaming...
I can't wait until A.I gets to the state where they can laugh, cry and become depressed - it'll be fantastic and a revolutional new style of game play.
Pikmin by the way, looks superb.
SHOCKY
> covering fire.
They might even get emotions like anger when their friend is
> killed or fear as a round of bullets fly past their ear.
Exactly my point, they could like run off of just go rambo style, or play it cool.
Night :o)
Look at Pikmin, there's over one hundred of these little cretins and they all have their own minds and personalities.
I think that AI will advance even further with computer player starting to think up strategies like surrounding the enemy or some men moving out while others lay covering fire.
They might even get emotions like anger when their friend is killed or fear as a round of bullets fly past their ear.
