My opinion?
No it wouldn't.
Why?, because look at the reason why these consoles failed or didn't conquer the world:
1. Game Gear
2. Atari Lynx
3. Pc Engine hand held
4. Neo Geo pocket
5. Neo Geo pocket colour
6. Wonder Swan

And that reason is?
Nintendo Gameboy and Gameboy Advance and its backwards compatibility.

Sonty woodnt get mush supprt from other devlopres but Squar wil supprt a Sony handhelp if they never maken one cos they not liken Nintedo mush.

As good as Sony are at selling their Machines, I wouln't expect a Handheld to do all that well, but it wouldn't be a total flop, I don't think, as sony do have a lot of power in this Market these days.

People are already happy with wot they got. Unlike nintendo, all the othe companies that have tried to tap into this market has failed because they are trying to beat the hardware and not the games! And the Gameboy's have the backing of nearly every games company, so its also hard to get people to make games for teir new machine!

GBA has great new games, plenty of good old ones and continuous development. It would take a mammoth effort to break significantly into that market !

I would put money on it (and I'm not a betting man) that it would NOT survive.
