Our house is going LAN!

Nothing to spectacular, just a desktop and one or two laptops going into a peer-to-peer join up.

I'll be needing a 4 port hub (we've agreed that 4 ports is enough), some ethernet cables and a network card (the desktop is fairly old).

That's simple enough, but then we want to link it all into ADSL.
That'll require a Router and a connection ISP.

Firstly, because the broadband connection will be channelled through the router, the built in firewall ought to protect the entire network from hackers, right?

Secondly, could anyone recommend a good ISP and a Router (both being Xbox-live compatable)?

Any help would be appreciated. Thanksyou. :-)

Mum and Dad are only looking into it for now, but if they go ahead then I'll be seriously considering getting an Xbox, especially with Halo 2 and Conker going Live.

heh

Just done this for our house.

Get a 10/100 NIC network card for each computer that will be connected, they only cost about £8-10 each.

Then go here:

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/acatalog/ [space] Online_Catalogue_Conventional_115.html

And get the Netgear DG814 ADSL Router - Retail (NW-007-NG)

Then head over to

http://www.cableuniverse.co.uk/ [space] catalog/default.php?cPath=23_31

And get however many (straight) Cat5e cables you will need, one for each computer to be connected. There's lots of differnt lenghs and stuff, and they're pretty cheap.

You could get Cat6 cables but there isn't much point, and they are a lot more expensive.

As for ISP, I just went with Freeola, make sure you choose the option that doesn't include the equipment, it's about £60.

Then setting it up is a piece of cake. Attach the microfilter that comes with the router to the telephone socket, then have one telephone cable going to your phone as normal, and the other into the router. Then you simply plug in the Cat5e cables, from the router to the computers network card.

It's really simple, and the manual you'll get with it explains it in simple and easy steps.

Don't ask me about the Xbox though. I havne't actually looked to see what kind of connection it has. If it's ethernet then just stick a cat5 in it and plus it into the router in the same way.

Bingo.
