Iíve been playing games since I was 3 years old, thatís for 9 years. I consider myself to be well versed in the gaming world and on the whole I know what Iím talking about. I donít know every in and out because Iím not that obsessed, but I know a fair bit.
One thing that really annoys me though is casual gamers. Fair enough, if you only play games semi-regularly because it doesnít interest you *that* much, thatís fine, I have no problem with that. What really gets under my skin though, is casual gamers who think they know what theyíre talking about.
I was having a conversation with my friend the other day and he asked me what console I was going to get next. I replied the GameCube because itís got the style of games Iím after and I consider Nintendo to be the best developers in the gaming world. I then asked him the same question. " X-Box" he replied. I asked him why and he said because it had the best games on it and that it was big so that meant it was more powerful and had better graphics.
Now this really, really, REALLY ticked me off. He said that it had the best games, how the hell did he know that? Heíd never played them and had probably never even taken the slightest bit of interest in the architecture of the machine. And the answer "Itís big so itíll have better graphics" annoyed me for two reasons.
1) Size is nothing in the world, let alone the gaming world
2) Better graphics? Does that really matter? Is that what you look for in a game? If so then I donít think you should be allowed anywhere near women, mate.
Casual gamers surround me. Out of the 32 people in my form, 23 of them have consoles, 29 of them have PCís/ iMacs and 1 of them is a proper gamer. And thatís me.
I hear them going on about the new game coming out and I join in on the conversation. "Why does that appeal to you?"
"Because itís got wicked graphics and Sony make it"
ARGHHH!!
Iím not denying people the right to play games casually because everyone can choose what they want to do in there free time itís just the fact that they have no knowledge of what theyíre talking about but they think that they do.
Itís like me trying to talk about pop music. I have no knowledge of it so Iíll keep my nose out of it. I will not but in to the conversation and say " HearíSay are the best because Kim has nice baps plus there music is better than everyone elseís because they were on TV"
Iíd be talking utter rubbish and be making a fool of myself. So why do casual gamers do it?
I really donít know and I really wouldnít care if they didnít feel the need to strut up to me when Iím having a proper conversation about something only to be interrupted by someone talking utter simian excreta.
Like I said, I donít care what there feelings are towards gaming, as long as they donít masquerade as knowing everything there is to do about it and are of the unshakeable conviction that they are right.

I haven't been playing games for 10 years, only really 6 or 7 (I think, I'm not exactly sure...).
Yet I'm not one of those people that are "oh so bad at playing them" either.
Some street gamers take the hobby a bit further and become an average gamer.
Some average gamers go on to become hardcore gamers.
I started as an average gamer.
I was 6 years old.
Then somehow at about 10, I devolved into a street gamer (that's natural when you only have a 3 year old Amiga).
When I was eleven I became an average gamer again when the new "State of the Art" P120 with 16MB of Ram.
Now I've grown into a hardcore gamer, and I'm still learning and growing in the digital world.
Who are you, what kind of a gamer are you on the inside, I have different names for different kinds of gamers.
The 'Hardcore Gamer' : The hardcore gamer has to have been around for at least 10 years, playing games ranging from the NES classics to the Dreamcast greats. These gamers are what make the market so great, they are the difference between companies releasing average games and amazing games, these gamers are the icing on the gaming cake.
The 'Average Gamer' : Although this gamer likes to think himself a cut above the rest, the fact is he is not, he plays games for the enjoyment and is always beaten when placed against any hardcore gamer. He is probably the boy next door with all the games and all the money, but boy oh boy he really is so bad at playing them.
The 'Street Gamer' : Hang on, a couple of weeks back 'The Simpsons Wrestling' went to number one in the charts, who brought this very bad game, the average and hardcore gamers have more sense, the 'street gamer' buys games which have been heavily advertised, if he sees others buying he doesn't want to be left out. These gamers populate the market and normally you will get a mixture between street and average, that is a bad combination...
The 'Union Gamer': Union gamers, the ones which always say 'I have never played this before' and the probably haven't, these gamers like to play at friends houses, they don't own a console or PC and are strangely good at multiplayer games...
The 'Modest Gamer': Everything this gamer owns is apparentely the 'best ever' thing in the world, even if has just brought WWTBAM he will still classify the game as 10/10. Don't listen to this gamer, he just isn't worth it.
The 'Hyping Gamer': Now this gamer is a tricky one, he can be a type of the above listed (you can get a hardcore hyping gamer), there position is to hype the product that they are going to buy, whether it be MGS2 or Mario Kart Advance, they will let you know the release, the characters and before they have even played it they will give you a review??
There are many more types of gamers, but the above are the ones that I come across on my travels to become the greatest games tester the world has ever seen (sorry about the bad Pokemon joke).
Next time you are at a friends or in a games shop, take a look around, the people who are standing next to you will fit into one of the above catagories, you just have a look, the hardcore gamer may be there to help you, the hyping gamer may be there to lead you away astray..

"Isn't that aimed at 5 year olds?"
Idiots!
> I don't think there's anything wrong with so called "casual gaming".
No, neither do I like I said. It's only when they masqeurade the fact that they think they know what they're talking about!
I'll wager that few of the casual
> gamers who claimed to have the knowledge were girls!
Nope. All blokes.
Men, generally don't like to seem like they don't know something, they would rather try and blag it and hope for the best. Thus, when your friends talk about gaming, they have to make up what they don't know and state it as gospel truth.
I'm no different, I generally know what I'm talking about within the gaming industry and certainly know more than most of my friends, but on other subjects I often just "act" like I know what I'm going on about and hope I don't come unstuck. Its fairly common.
I'll wager that few of the casual gamers who claimed to have the knowledge were girls!
I know this isnt about games but look what my mate said.
I told him that my mum bought on ford xr2i and he said that his brother had an xr3i, fair enough, but then he said it was as standard and whatever the number is that means that thats the engine size, like he said that his bro's xr3i had a 3 litre engine in it!!!
Insane!!!
Same principal just different topic.
He thought he knew what he was on about.
Are we to see the best games being less popular than the commercial ones?
To be honest, I think GT3 is lame. It just seems rather unimaginative to me.
How exciting can it be to drive a car with a joypad, for christs sake?
And then you have about five million cars to unlock or buy. Are you supposed to get some sense of achievement for getting them? Especially when time, rather than skill, is all you need to get them.
I think I'm digressing from the topic....
Anyway, I have nothing against the casual gamer. Only the shepherds guiding them.
