Cheers
I've heard that Datel are releasing a new disc shortly which should prevent any further incompatibility and erasing issues.
Are Datel the makers of DVDRx? I thought it was a code junkies thing?
I'm sure that I've even seen Datel stating that using it doesn't invalidate your warranty.
They've probably got a sad-on because they decided not to stock it whilst everyone else is raking in the profits.

I haven't tried this yet, but I will tonight and let you know.
I do know that the Region X saves a file to the memory card, so it could be that it's semi-permanent (i.e. the region setting will remain unless you remove the mem card or delete the file).
Also, did you know that Game won't stock Region X? They reckon it's "illegal and invalidates your warranty".
While the legality is questionable, I fail to se how it can invalidate the warranty. You don't need to open the machine, and as soon as you remove the memory card, everything reverts to normal... so who the hell would know?!
> Why didn't Sony have the DVD region free to start with
Speaking very, very strictly, region-free DVD players are not 'legal' - at least, not according to the money-grabbing film companies.
Sony were one of the major players in developing the DVD standard, and that standard includes the regional coding.
Regional coding was insisted upon by the film companies, who didn't like the idea of the rest of world waiting for DVD release and not going to see the film at the cinema. i.e. they want to screw as much cash out of the public as possible. When you consider that the income from a £15 DVD purchase will probably provide far more revenue than a £5 cinema ticket, the only logic behind this is that they want more money.
Anyway, as Sony were involved in the development, it wouldn't be 'right' for them to go against their own agreed regulations by providing a region-free DVD player. It's also worth noting that, although they can be 'chipped', no *dedicated* Sony DVD players are multi-region off-the-shelf either.

There was no official DVD remote when the PS2 was launched. Only recently, with the introduction of the western-style PS2 (i.e. internal HDD bay) in Japan has Sony released a pack with the remote included.
Also bear in mind that not everyone will be interested in playing DVD movies on their PS2, so they won't want to pay 'extra' for the remote. Having it optional is the best way, although they could well offer a package/deal in the future which contains the remote.
Changing the subject slightly... it is clearly stated with DVD Region X that the product is not endorsed by Sony. This will always be Sony's official stance, I'm sure - but secretly they must be loving it. To have a normal DVD player chipped will invalidate the warranty, unless of course you buy a pre-chipped unit from one of the companies which sell them.
With a PS2 and Region X, you have a market-leading games console with a very good DVD player, and region-free capability, without losing your warranty cover. That can only be seen as a major selling point!

So it looks like you have suffered with this problem. I'm wondering if the official mem card is OK but the madcatz one causes hassle. COULD be an explanation.
As for changing region, I have to insert the Reg X disc every time I've reset the console (no need whilst console is on).
Does this mean that the new version makes the PS2 permanently Region 1 (for example) until you change it to another one? That's not the case with the previous version.
Getting saves back seems unlikely if the game can't locate them - what do you see when you look at the memory card via the PS2 browser screen?
Last point - making the PS2 region free was going to land Sony in very hot water, Japanese PS2's were able to be hacked at first but they soon put a stop to that....
